We All Need Pet Robot Dogs After Coperni’s Fall/Winter 2023 Collection

The French brand Coperni continues adding massive shock value to its branding after spraying a whole dress onto Bella Hadid’s body for their last Spring/Summer 2023 Collection show. Wondering how you could top that? How about robot dogs? Coperni proved that man and machine can coexist after showcasing their Fall/Winter ready-to-wear collection in Paris, France this week. The runway took place in what seemed to be a dimly lit arena with light shining directly into the center wooden stage where about five yellow “dog-like” spot robots from the American company Boston Dynamics lay at each perimeter.

With loose inspiration from Jean de la Fontaine’s “The Wolf and the Lamb” fable, The show distinguishes a central theme that raises questions regarding the balance of power between people and technology. As the show began, each robot began to seamlessly “communicate” with the models coming down the runway.  One moment in particular that stood out the most in the showcase was a robot dog ripping off a shawl of a model, revealing a cutout dress underneath. In all honesty, it was a bit unsettling seeing the two staring at one another, but it was also quite entrancing watching the 20-second ordeal.

Each look that walked out from the large dark hallway and out to the floor ranged from more subtle pieces, suit jackets, business wear, and shawls in colors grays and black to slowly progressing into much more eccentric silhouettes. Printed leather jackets or blouses with lambs and robots coinciding had been a recurring design throughout the show. Fringed, black, and cut-out dresses and bodysuits were also a bold statement. Reworked denim with open zippers, belt buckles at the kneecaps, and pocketed shorts had caught my eye. These pieces seemed breathable to wear on a daily basis but easy to dress up for a night out. Some other looks that had caught my eye happened to be silver dresses and tops with metal-like feathers. The material had been so detailed it was almost scary since it looked painted over, which seemed to coexist with the recurring theme of life on earth coexisting with a more modernized future of fashion through the rapid advancement of technology. Not to mention the inclusion of fur illustrated through coats, zip-up sweaters, skirts, and dresses ranging from white to brown.

Sebastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant continue to live up to their popular reputation by delivering full-blown theatrical performances with their newest Fall/Winter 2023 Collection. The symbolism of the blossoming relationship between humans and technology was both poetic and a bit terrifying. They certainly make arrangements to direct the next season of Black Mirror because they would honestly kill it.
