Alex Consani Deserves Model of the Year

On the runway, most people pay attention to the clothes specifically. However, as vain as this sounds, half of my attention is attached to the person who delivers the pieces to us down the runway. From 1990 to now, something in the catwalk air has shifted; what happened to attitude, exaggerated hips, and dramatics? There have not been very memorable walks recently, and designers are going for the same monotone walk with recent shows. We have all said it, and the age of the Super Model is likely dead. Many of us could barely name five of our favorite catwalk muses without Bella, Gigi, or Kendall being included. However, an “ubermodel” is someone like Naomi Cambell or Giselle Buchen, a girl with a face and walk people worldwide can recognize. Many ‘90s icons have been crowned as “ubermodels,” a term recently crowned upon our fave models– such as Bella Hadid after her Coperni 2022 show performance. For some, the theatrical aspects of fashion have faded in the past decade. The walks of each model have filtered from a dance across the stage to a robotic march. How can we have supermodels when everyone walks and acts the same? But a fresh new face has graced our present since last year’s autumn/winter fashion month. This Tiktok Gen-Z queen is slowly rising to be the new princess of pumping the runway; Alex Consani is bringing fashion back to life with her personality and sultry strides.

To be honest, many models deserve their flowers and are simply slept on due to a lack of connections. Whether this is based on money or status, it’s the reason we never see any models being applauded that aren’t nepo babies. But Ms. Consani has been turning heads all on her own since her TikTok page, @captaincrook, blew up during the pandemic in 2020. The 19-year-old quickly grew in popularity through her over-the-top humor and extroverted persona. Both off and on the runway, her unapologetic nature has allowed her to walk for the most prominent names in the industry. After signing with IMG models, Consani has graced the runways of McQueen, Versace, and recently the Mugler Catwalk with confidence exuding each strut.

Consani has invited her audience to TikTok in the newest chapter of her life as an up-and-coming supermodel. Her walk allowed her fan base to grow while catching the attention of the biggest fashion houses. Consani has also brought up her success as an openly trans woman and has provided an extensive platform pushing for the inclusion of queer models in the industry. Everything Alex has been in, from shows to editorials, has genuinely delivered the fantasy I once believed was long gone. As NYFW began , she had already shown off her “ubermodel” potential on the runways of Dion Lee and Thom Browne. It is so important to give POC/LGBTQIA+ models their flowers when there are so many that are genuinely talented. I love me some Bella Hadid, but we need more slayage from the underdogs on these runways! She cannot do it all on her own. Alex Consani truly is a performer, and that is precisely what we need again on the runway. I am one for the theatrics, and Alex is one of the select few bringing fashion back to life. I can’t wait to see what other designers she will walk for this upcoming fashion month!
