Traces of the 1920’s at the 2020 SAG Awards

The 2020 SAG awards red carpet was overflowing with nostalgia on January 19th. Those lucky enough to receive an invite or a nominee arrived around 5:30pm, with the actual awards beginning at 8:00pm. The red carpet radiated Gatsby energy and left us wonderstruck at the silks, sparkles, and beaded looks that held immaculate 1920’s energy.

The 1920’s were a daring time and a period of advancement for the women’s fashion industry. This decade was detrimental to women’s rights and progressions, so a ton of bold decisions were made that eased into the norm for women. Here, women could be seen sporting beaded attire, pearls, faux fur, gemstones, and pants (which were unacceptable for women to wear previously). Additionally, women often wore their hair pinned back or in a wavy fashion.

One of the best embodiments of this Gatsby-like essence was Camila Mendes. The Riverdale star stepped onto the red carpet in grand gown designed by Ralph & Russo; a privately held company based in Europe. The gown features a lot of heavy beading down the body of the dress with a plunging mesh neckline. The dress was caped- giving it more of an eloquent look. This gown screams 1920’s with its beading and muted, almost nude color. Camila brought a lot of class to the carpet with this gown- however kept this balance of eloquence and risqué.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, winning the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series for her part in Fleabag, was another embodiment of the decade. Her 3-piece set was an Armani design and if 1920’s grunge existed- this would be it. Her beaded, netted top was bold, paired with a simple black bandeau style top and skirt. Her gown, matched with her slicked back, wavy hairstyle, was an overall nod to the 1920’s as we enter this new decade.

Another major theme that seemed to grace the red carpet was that of the classic silk gown. By the 1920’s, silk had become more accessible to the middle class and was being used for dresses, ties, and also lingerie. Sporting the classic silk gown on the SAG 2020 runway also carried a lot of this nostalgic, celebratory feel. Some of these attendees included Sofie Turner in a hot pink Louis Vuitton strapless gown, Yvonne Strahovski in a white Khyeli dress with a wrap that mimicked a faux fur stole, and even Scarlett Johansson in a teal, silk Armani gown. Jennifer Anniston was also amongst these in an off-white Christian Dior dress.

Bold statements were made at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards. As the roaring 20’s was a decade of prosperity for the American fashion industry, economy, and the Country as whole, we can only hope to see those same patterns with the start of this new decade. These celebratory themes and styles are classic- and should be embraced in 2020. With 100 years passing since the emergence of these game-changing trends, we don’t see them going anywhere soon.
