Grammy's 2020 Fashion Hits, Misses, and Trends

To no surprise, 2020 is treating us well this award season. But we can’t just let these looks slip by us, especially the best, the worst, the cool comebacks, and the innovators on the red carpet.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish not only took home 5 Grammy awards, but wore 3 award winning Gucci down to the socks outfits. Literally, even Eilish’s nails were laid in Gucci, an unforgettable beauty look of the night. Eilish has been known to shock and change the fashion game with oversized and baggy clothing that completely cover her feminine features – something she prefers. Alongside that she’s not afraid to have a diverse color palette in her wardrobe, as long as it matches her hair color of the moment at times. She’s kept her sleek black and green combo for a while now and Gucci was able to compromise this semi-permanent hairdo, first off with a bedazzled pant and blazer set over a slouchy turtle-neck with puff sleeves, all accompanied by sunglasses, hoop earrings, gloves, and a face mask. For someone who held the spotlight this red carpet, Eilish managed to camouflage amongst the black Grammy red carpet backdrop. Gucci continued to carry Eilish through her performance with the same exact outfit but in a contrasting, more heavenly crème white color which made her shine just as bright as her first Grammy performance. Of course, Gucci ended Eilish’s night with a red and blue sweat-suit with a contrasting tan polo underneath to match her sneakers and oversized hater blockers. Hopefully this isn’t the end for Eilish’s ongoing success, but possibly her hair color as we await to see what’s next for this it-girl’s unforgettable everyday looks and attire.

Lil Nas X

Man of the hour, more like the year – Lil Nas X spun heads – good and bad with his custom Versace and of course, western inspired studded leather jacket, belted pant, and cowboy boots and hat. While the hot pink color choice was already a double take for most, Versace decided to keep details and texture in mind throughout the fit with a fishnet top under the cute crop top jacket, as well as a dominatrix harness. Finally, to truly symbolize the song that stayed number one for NINETEEN WEEKS, we see that his wrists are wrapped by some silky scarves and his fingers adorned with some thick banded rings. Unfortunately, as outrageously cool and confident Nas was to truly emphasize his first time at the Grammys, he faced some hate from multiple Anti-Gay people, one being fellow rapper, Pastor Troy who to top off his rant, believed Nas would not win an award. Well, who’s talking now Pastor Troy? Troy has since deleted the Instagram post but can be read here.

Billy Porter

Of course, we need to discuss THE Billy Porter’s epitome outfit of Billy Porter. The red carpet’s prized possession was head to toe turquoise in a Scott Studenberg sparkle jumpsuit, crop top blazer set and was styled throughout with silver detailing with his clutch, wrist banded jewels, and brought back the choker in the most chic way alongside his platform boots. What stole the show was Porter’s innovative and Smooth Technology incorporated Sarah Sokol curtain closing hat for in Porter’s words, “Get on my nerves, and the curtain closes!” What’s adorable about this fashion moment is that Porter’s stylist, Sam Ratelle followed him the entire carpet waiting hand and foot for Porter’s que to open and close the curtain on the photogs.

Lizzo

In contrast to her typical crazy and fun performances on and off the stage, Lizzo is known to keep it classy on the red carpet with her continuous elegance in long extravagant dresses. On purpose or not, Lizzo was laid in heavenly white Versace with a fur shawl, channeling the look of Britney Spears Grammy 2000 look, which is said to be originally be inspired by Marilyn Monroe.

Lana Del Rey

For some people, just like her upset at the Grammy’s to Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey shook the viewers with her look. As corky and relatable it was for Lana to wear a dress from the mall, it seems that we could’ve expected more from someone who stays quite hidden from the public eye at times – in a way more extravagant. Lana’s Hollywood glam was very true to herself with simple makeup and thick black eyeliner. Maybe it’s her updo that ages the dress and herself more, but maybe Lana should stick to letting her stylist worry about the red carpet attire.

Dua Lipa

Super fun, yet chic and simple was Dua Lipa’s red carpet, turned after party look just as Billie Eilish pulled off this night. Dua decided to channel her late 90s/early 2000s vibes from her hair to her toes in a white silk Alexander Wang tank and maxi skirt set, which she later transitioned into the same set in black to set the after party mood. Looking closer at her look, we see that Dua further channeled the beauty seen from 20 years ago with a tight updo characterized by a top knot and pieces of her hair pulled out to shape and cling to the sides of her face. The outgrown roots are done rightfully so to complete the look alongside her flashy blue eyeshadow. The choker seemed to be a trend of the night as we again see Dua included this accessory into her minimal look. My favorite part about Dua’s look is that she decided to kick off her heels and slide into some classic black hot top Converse to ensure a comfortable yet cute night out with fellow stars.

The Jonas Brothers

The Jonas Brothers showed up to perform and didn’t come to play. Kevin and Nick kept it classy but cool in a blazer pant look with a casual tee underneath while Joe kept it fresh in a more youthful way through a bomber jacket with matching pants and turtleneck underneath. Of course, the three kept each other united as one through a theme of gold with Nick emphasized by the most gold the three wore. They’re outfits come from Ermenegildo Zegna XXX. Unarguably, this color couldn’t suit an artist or group better with the successful comeback these men have had this past year.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande sweetened the red carpet just like her music. The artist might not have walked away with a Grammy, but she definitely caught everyone’s attention in her voluminous Giambattista Valli ball gown. The dress itself is astonishing and the on trend smoky grey color gives her some edge, but the dress could  be toned down in size for Grande a little. For this 5’0’ God of a woman, maybe the designer should’ve kept Grande’s petite-ness in mind as the dress engulfs her more than it should. Although Grande’s loyalty to herself and her look for her fans is appreciated by the long ponytail, it seems that with this dress she could’ve done something a little more glam in the hair department. Not even for a performance or the after party, did Grande subtly change into a similar outfit on the red carpet. Grande slipped out of the gown into a scoop neck halter style top and a skirt similar to the first dress in how it takes over her whole body. Again, the volume is spectacular and stunning, but could’ve been a bit smaller to accommodate Grande’s size. The gloves were a nice touch that truly embodied the elegance and beauty that Grande was striving for.

Maggie Rogers

Newcomer Maggie Rogers was an absolute joy and favorite to the red carpet – whoever is her stylist – well done period. Rogers looked delightful in a pre-fall 2014 Chanel dress and was accessorized by a water bottle holder/purse. I don’t know who is more starry eyed – Roger’s dress or me.

Tyler, the Creator

Well worth the wait, Tyler, the Creator received his first Grammy for Rap Album of the Year. Upon accepting his award he stepped onto the red carpet in a witty bellhop uniform – no surprise – custom designed from his Golf Le Fleur line. It seemed prior to his acceptance that the more casual outfit in the suitcase could be for his must see performance. Whether they were tucked in the suitcase or not, Tyler went on to perform in a split color suit and his Igor alter ego portobello mushroom shaped wig. Tyler came full circle on his looks when he finally wins his award as every outfit was of another on trend color, or should I say color combo, red and pink. If anything, this night was the most Tyler, the Creator I’ve ever seen and an iconic one if not.

Rosalía

Another fresh face and Grammy winner, Rosalía, could’ve gone either way when it came to her look. Wearing a custom red leather Alexander Wang dress is enough a challenge to pull over. The texture of leather can come off bulky or sleek depending how one wears it. Possibly choosing a red color, different from the original on the runway was to symbolize her Latin roots with its fiery. However, while the leather look looks great, it might’ve looked better in a darker shade of red to make the dress look less cheap in design. Looking further into the details there’s a lot going on on top of all the layering leather: three belts and elongated fringe. The shoes as well are a little underwhelming and could’ve been replaced by something that a little more wow factor to them. Overall, her glam squad did great as she look stunning in a lighter shade of red lip and pink blush.

Baby Rexha

Returning to the Grammys, Baby Rexha kept it sexy but classic in a boss babe look. She wore a black suit with a twist: a wide plunge down the center but added some sparkle with a tight bedazzled long sleeve turtleneck in which the sleeves peeked out to her fingers – just so cool.

H.E.R

H.E.R as well was on the red carpet as she arrived to give a beautiful performance. Opposing this performance was what the printed Dsquared 2 kimono and belted gold at the waist. Although I can personally appreciate a 70s vibe with the aid of her orange tinted eyewear and poofy high bun with baby locks peaking out, there just seems to be too much going on without anything really going on in end. Overall, she looks like she just got out of the pool or refreshing body of water on an island. But this isn’t a tropical vacation - it’s the Grammys – one would think one would try a little harder for such a big and spectacular night to celebrate music.

Shawn Mendes, Common

Both Shawn Mendes and Common looked charming in both their Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana suit. Nothing to say here except they look berry good.

Khalid

Another contender to a vibrant hued suit was Khalid in a Siés Marjan suit that contrasted nicely with a baby blue version of Billy Porter’s turquoise. Even with this outfit, Khalid wins in a battle with the red carpet.

Camilla Cabello

Camilla Cabello wore two completely different looks between the red carpet/after party and her tear-jerker Grammy performance to her father front row in the crowd. Cabello was in high spirits in a spunkier version of a typical Versace dress. Whether an act of sustainability was taken here or not, Cabello came ready to party as she ripped off the layering bottom part to the dress and was left with a flirty spectacle. For her performance, Cabello caught America’s attention in her custom Versace dress which again appeared to be a mini version with an elongated attachment. I would feel bad if I didn’t mention this, but most think these high-profile musicians receive the best of the best and most expensive products when getting ready for such a big night. Cabello looked gorgeous as she was painted in L’oréal beauty products from her $13 foundation to her bouncy, voluminous $11 mascara filled eyelashes. All the products she used can be read here on her makeup guru’s Instagram, @Patrickta.

FKA Twigs

FKA Twigs took elegance to a new degree in her edgy Ed Marler gown. This dress was definitely made with her in mind with its pink and black coloring mesh/lace catsuit detailing underneath the dress. Her glam squad kept it clean with a stunning eyeshadow palette of pinks from light to dark values that emphasized her big brown eyes. Not sure what you call the shoulder part to the dress, but the enlarged areas and sweetheart/v-neckline emphasizes her chest and face in the most graceful of ways.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen joined her husband John Legend to cheer him on during his Grammy performance and support his nominations and like usual, didn’t disappoint the red carpet.

Teigen’s glowed in a shade of orange in a Yanina Couture gown. The only mark this dress is missing is the way it could’ve used a little more structure throughout the enlarged shoulders and through the plunge. Legend went nontraditional with his suiting in a half-short, half-long jacket, by Alexander McQueen. Again, we see that grey has dominated the red carpet this Grammy season and is a refresh from the average Joe black suiting.

Swae Lee

Swae Lee looked adorable but brawny in a Dundas either religious/western vibe slinky suit that emphasizes his tattooed chest and diamond chain cross. Lee almost looks angelic in this pure white with silver embellishment and boots.

Ben Platt

Ben Platt somehow made it to the Grammy’s being suffocated by a Balmain suit. Whoever tailored this did not favor Platt with it’s super tight fit throughout every inch of his body.

Liza Koshy

As much as we love Liza Koshy, we hate to see that she disappointed in her Grammy look with this Pamella Rolland zoo park catastrophe. Of course, it’s the Grammy’s so whoever put her in this wanted to represent Koshy’s free spirited and humorous personality, but maybe the dress could’ve done better if elongated to the floor – possibly a more clean and elegant achromatic look.

Ali Tamposi

Ali Tamposi probably should’ve left the sequin pillow trend in 2019 is all I can say.

Trevor Noah

While still a bit lackluster, Trevor Noah still managed to pull off a dreamy pop of champagne in his black and pale gold contrast suit.
