Spring Break is How Soon?
Time to start hitting the gym and stocking up on bikinis as the first Spring Break of the decade quickly approaches. Resort wear for 2020 largely consists of trends including iridescent fabrics, laser-cut patterns, and lots of spaghetti straps. Another theme emerging in swimwear is sustainability as many designers are marketing their lines as “going green”. Reflections of this eco-friendly movement appear in fashion with natural, muted colors. Differences between shapewear and swimwear become scarce as designers blend the two together with multi-use garments. A fairly new term, “swim-timates” presents itself as modular cuts resembling undergarments become favorable . From sleek, modern one-pieces to strappy, striking bikinis, here are the latest trends for Spring swimwear 2020.
The release of Pantone’s “conscious clay’ palette inspired many of the designs of this season. Today’s consumers demand sustainable products, and designers are giving them just that. Natural colors are beneficial to those who are not looking to invest in new swimwear every season as they withstand the test of time. Choosing darker colors can also help to hide the details of a fabric making inexpensive materials look more high-end. Moderately priced designers such as Victoria's Secret, Nasty Gal, and Chromat follow this trend offering affordable variations of this season's trending colors. For those admirers of sustainable fashion who are working with a larger budget, Carbon38, Kora Swim, and Alix NYC offer unique designs that will be sure to stand out at any pool-side party.
Strategic straps and intricate lace-up details create dynamic patterns on otherwise simple designs. Designers such as Vince Camuto, MIKOH, and Becca carry lines displaying this tied-up trend at a reasonable price. Strapping is not only popular in swimwear this season, but can be seen throughout resort wear and even streetwear. When it comes to pairing pieces with strappy suits, flowy cover-ups and bottoms are the perfect match. Look out for this contrast of tight and loose pieces as it appeared all over the catwalks at Miami Swim Week.
As we enter the 20’s, luxe materials with shiny finishes add a futuristic flare to swimwear. Shimmering fabrics are great against the natural setting of the beach and stand out in the sun. Pairing silver and gold jewelry and accessories with these glossy materials looks chic for a pool party day look. A shiny swimsuit can also distract from the quality of the bikini for those purchasing cheaper pieces. Check out these designs from Revolve, Kendall + Kylie, and Top Shop to get a glittering suit that won’t completely drain the Spring Break fund.
Shapewear in itself has skyrocketed becoming one of the most popular trends in the past couple years. Celebrity lines such as Skims by Kim Kardashian West and SAVAGE X FENTY by Rihanna are extremely popular at the moment, which could be why designers have mimicked some of their shapewear looks into their suits. The natural tones of these pieces allow wearers to get more usage out of their bikinis as they can double as bodysuits or undergarments when paired with streetwear. To see more of this style check out Franki's Bikinis, Missguided, and Vitamin A. Mix and match any of these trends as you soak up the sun this Spring Break!
