Reviewing Outfits from Netflix’s Holidate

Out of Netflix’s recent slew of Christmas-themed releases comes Holidate, a romantic comedy starring Emma Roberts in various outfits spanning the year’s holidays, from Saint Patrick’s Day to Halloween to New Year’s Eve.

While the movie itself is not anything to write home about, the purpose of this article is not to conduct a film review. Rather, I will be reviewing a handful of the on-screen outfits worn by Emma Roberts' character, Sloane. If the machine that is Netflix Originals™ is good for anything, it is good for this.

The opening scene of Holidate features what is, without a doubt, my favorite outfit in the entire movie: an oversized, black denim and sherpa jacket with a red hoodie underneath. This look automatically becomes cooler because of its layers. The red of Sloane’s hoodie complements the black and white of the denim and fleece. By layering pieces, Sloane adds depth to her outfit, adding necessary color and fabric variety.

Before I offer any insight, I am going to disregard the fact that Sloane decided to wear this outfit on Thanksgiving. Her all-black ensemble does not make me feel cozy and warm like Thanksgiving should, but it is just cute enough to get away with.

First of all, a black leather skirt with sheer black tights is a match made in heaven, a pairing that will never go out of style. Additionally, Sloane’s shrug-style cardigan, featuring bright floral patches, makes the outfit pop and balances out the punk feel of her bottoms with the hippy influence of the vibrant flowers. It’s girly and edgy—the perfect combo.

This outfit is another one of my favorites from the movie. The halter top (which adds a feminine touch to her outfit) is flattering and the dark red pairs nicely with the olive green of her cargo pants. By the way, high-rise cargo pants are amazing for several reasons: they offer endless pockets, they are a good middle ground between casual jeans and fancy slacks, and it is impossible to not look like a badass when wearing them. This outfit is simple but effective.

While I did not enjoy Holidate nearly as much as I had hoped I would, I did get some enjoyment out of Sloane’s many outfits from the film. Because the movie spans an entire year, Emma Roberts’ character dresses for every season. Thus, Holidate offers a wide range of fashion choices for the humble Netflix viewer to judge as they binge-watch in their PJs.
