Influential Celebrities in Fashion: Straying from the Norm
The fashion world can be quite intimidating at times. You look online and see a new image, like Kim Kardashian rocking a leather look at Tiffany & Co.’s October 26th Lock Collection Launch Party. You think to yourself: everyone is going to go crazy over this outfit. People foreseeing new trends are influenced to buy once the outfit spreads around the media.
The next thing you know, everyone seems to own said item. Even I decided to search for the clothes online, but just as I was about to click on the shopping cart, I hesitated. Do I really want to buy this… or do I just want to fit in?
It is hard to find comfort in clothes and fashion with pressure from trends. Yes, the clothes may look amazing on Kim, but what about my body shape? Will I feel comfortable wearing this outfit? If I don’t follow the trend, will I be an outcast? All of these fears combined together ultimately persuaded me to follow the norm.
Models and celebrities are our fashion trendsetters, but to me, truly influential celebrities are ones that stray from the normal trends in fashion. Their confidence in what they wear, no matter how unique, helps inspire others to define their own style.
Take a look at Billie Eilish, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter whose style is made up of oversized shirts and pants. Ever since her rise to fame in 2015, her streetwear look pushes to redefine femininity. Her style differs from the norm of tight, fitted dresses and heels. As seen at the LACMA Art and Film Gala on November 5th, Billie wore comfy Gucci pajamas on the red carpet, with an oversized blanket wrapped around her. Seeing how comfortable she has been in her skin while wearing something untraditional at an event, screams influential.
Similarly, singer Harry Styles can be seen wearing flashy, sparkly outfits, from jumpsuits to flare pants. As seen during his recent tour, Love on Tour, his outfits were a breath of fresh air in the world of men’s fashion. His style choices far differ from other male celebrities, as he will wear clothes that aren’t what society normally defines as masculine. We are able to capture his message that clothes don’t have a gender, and this is quite inspiring. Feel comfortable and yourself in whatever you want to wear!
One last person that I can’t forget to mention is youtuber Emma Chamberlain. Her perfect description is that she wears whatever she wants, whether it works or not. Chamberlain would be the one to try on cheetah print pants with a vintage “grandma” sweater for the sake of trying something new. She pairs clothing that you wouldn’t expect together, and if she likes it, she wears it no matter what the public commentary will be. In her October 23rd Instagram post, Chamberlain is seen posing in a yellow puffer vest and navy long sleeve, followed by a green and yellow knitted midi skirt. Her style is funky, eye-catching, and never boring. She always inspires me to fearfully try something new.
My first rule of thumb: if you hesitate at the shopping cart, don’t buy it. Wear those skinny jeans, or that uniquely designed oversized sweater that you’ve been hiding in your closet for months. Wear those big, chunky knee-high boots that are a little crazy. If Billie, Harry, and Emma aren’t afraid, then it is comforting to know that you shouldn’t be scared either.
