How to be Goth-Punk in the Summer Heat
If you’ve ever jokingly called yourself a vampire or wear exclusively black, you might be wondering what to wear around this time of year when the sun is shining and everything is in pastel. How do you translate your Queen of Darkness look into the sweltering temperatures of summer? Many dark-alternative aesthetics depend on heavy clothing, but that isn’t practical when the thermostat reaches 105 degrees. This is a guide on how to maintain your edge in a season dominated by bright colors and cheery attitudes.
Black Slip and Long, Layered Necklace
Slip dresses have been a huge trend over the past few years and for obvious reasons: they’re simple, lightweight, and effortlessly sexy. To take this universal favorite to the dark side, wear long, layered necklaces with pendants that wrap around your neck and hang low enough to graze your belly button. Incorporate some drama with long mesh gloves and decorated fingers. Chunky silver rings with stones or skulls will tie in the necklace and toughen up the delicate gloves.
Little Shirt, Big Pants
A little shirt and big pants is the new alt-girl look. Tripps are the ultimate old school pick for any alternative outfit and have been around for decades. The straps and buckles are intense and reminiscent of punk Vivienne Westwood, but are influential enough to be seen in all different style tribes. We can all sacrifice a little heat for a good outfit, but to avoid a heat stroke try pairing these heavy pants with a plain black tank top. There’s no need to pile on tons of different elements into this look; just let the pants do the heavy lifting. Dr. Marten boots are the obvious choice for this look, but if your toes need some air, try out one of their many pairs of sandals.
PVC Mini Skirt & Muscle Tee
There’s nothing further from the norm than dabbling with fetish wear. This liquid black mini skirt is a must have for all wardrobes. The lacing details on the front give serious high octane sex appeal. The beauty of pairing this skirt with a muscle tee is that it can go from day to night. You’ll either be dressed very well for the mall or look too cool to be overly polished at dinner. A regular t-shirt can look a little boxy with this ensemble, so try the muscle shirt to accentuate your body’s natural shape. This skirt calls for heels in black patent leather to match the PVC skirt.
Cargo Shorts + Mesh top + Beret
If you prefer a more masculine style, this look is for you. Long black cargo shorts are comfortable, cool, and practical. They border on hypebeast territory, but the long sleeve black mesh top steers it away from being too sporty. The key to this outfit are the shoes and beret. These black oxford Dr. Martens are classics and enhance the boyishness the shorts are already giving us. This look goes a full step further with the beret, which makes it totally private school. This is a campy take on summer style that will work on anyone. If the mesh top turns you off, try a plain black t-shirt or short-sleeved button down.
