How Music Speaks When People Can’t

When we don’t know what we’re feeling or how to understand our constant stream of thoughts, we turn to music for answers. Like when you are driving with the windows down, listening to throwbacks, and you feel like everything will be okay. Or when you were a kid looking out the window on a long road trip while imagining yourself as the main character in a music video (let’s be honest, we all did it). Or when you screamed the lyrics of Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood after your boyfriend broke up with you. Or when you’re dancing with your friends at 2 A.M. blasting your favorite songs. When words fail, music steps in, giving us feelings of clarity and peace.

The sense of nostalgia is where the music gets its power. We all have that song that reminds us of a certain person, time, or feeling. Almost as if we’re being taken back in time for a few minutes. The way our brain unconsciously connects moments in our lives to certain songs is what makes music so personal and sentimental. Music has the power to remind us of the times in our lives that we cherish, but also the times that we wish to forget. The way music can determine our mood is fascinating. We often gravitate towards music that will enhance or even validate our current feelings. It allows us to connect in a way that the expression of words lacks and helps us understand the deeper meaning of life.

Music has the ability to bring people together and promote a sense of community. People form relationships in a new way where they share these common emotions. It's beautiful the way it connects people. Singing together, sharing music, and going to concerts creates a sense of closeness and form bonds, synchronizing our brains and bodies through the rhythms and vibrations. These coordinated movements from singing and dancing with others release dopamine and deepen our connections with others. When you’re at a concert, you aren’t worried about those around you or how you look – you’re there to embrace the music and feel the lyrics flow through your body. This experience is unlike any kind of bond and makes you appreciate artists and others in a new way. It can even be a form of a love language; sending songs to those that remind you of them, is the key to many hearts, making someone feel special and relevant.

Music gives us confidence, empowerment, and the little push needed to be bold. Whether you’re getting ready to go out, preparing for a first date, or running a marathon, there’s always a song to get you through those exhilarating moments. With the constant pressure of society bringing us down, the music picks us back up without us even knowing it. A world without music would be a dull, dark, and terrifying place. Music allows us to see new perspectives, opportunities, and beginnings that allow us to embrace our true selves.
