Doja Cat is known for her distinctive, eye-catching looks and daring, unique beauty choices —especially since the recent shaving of her head and eyebrows. Despite this, she left viewers speechless after pulling up to the Schiaparelli show on January 20th sporting a fully jeweled head-to-toe inferno red look.

The inferno look was achieved using 30,000 Swarovski crystals hand placed by makeup artist, Pat McGrath, and a large team of artists. In an Instagram caption, McGrath detailed the five-hour process and stated that the look was a “fusion with front row and runway.” McGrath also aided in applying the gold and bronze-plated makeup used on models for the runway. Doja Cat’s look was extensive and required a lot of time and effort from a team of artists to ensure Schiaparelli's vision came to fruition. Ultimately, the makeup and beauty aspect of the look played an essential role in bringing the look to life.

Daniel Roseberry, the artistic director for Schiaparelli, is known for his surrealistic works and for creating a unique aesthetic using unusual fabrics and constructing technical innovations. Schiaparelli's most recent show was influenced by the first part of the epic poem Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, recounting Dante’s journey through Hell. His vision is evident through Doja Cat’s custom, red hot look, relying on the heavy usage of red paint, glitter, and gems for her makeup. Models on the runway, however, were complete with Roseberry’s signature gold-plated face and body paint, blurring the lines between sculptures and individuals. McGrath comments on how Doja Cat’s look takes the theme of live sculptures and brings it from the runway to the front row. Given that her look not only blurs the lines between sculptures and people but also puts emphasis on how beauty and makeup can play a role in bringing together a cohesive look that impacts and impresses an audience.

However, this isn’t the first time that the singer has utilized bold body paint to convey a certain message. Last season at A.W.A.K.E Mode’s Spring 2023 show, Doja Cat was painted entirely in gold, wearing a coat by Simon Miller. The metallic gold paint also matched her long nails that her nail artist Saccia used to bring the look together. Similar, to her look for Schiaparelli this gold paint also made her look as if she was a statue. Just five days following her inferno look, Doja arrived at the Viktor and Rolf show wearing a mustache, goatee, and eyebrows made with false lashes. She paired the look with sunglasses that were blue-tinted. The look came after Doja Cat posted on her Instagram story that “If lashes are what you want, then lashes are what you’ll get.” This look served as a response to fans stating that they were let down because she didn’t have lashes paired with her red Schiaparelli ensemble earlier that week.

The singer's determination to display innovative looks and break expectations is inspiring to creatives that are fearful of pushing boundaries. Doja Cat's openness to experimentation highlights the multitude of ways she utilizes self-expression to showcase her personality and identity.
