From One Thrifter to Another

Thrifting is one of those hobbies that you either really love or really hate. As a girl who loves to thrift, I try my hardest to find pieces that not only match my sense of style but also embrace the uniqueness and individuality of it. Here are 5 tips along with some Do’s and Don'ts when thrifting your next outfit!

  1. Look through every aisle! Don’t skip. There are pieces that you may think you won’t like, but you will miss them if you don’t look through it all. Some tops, pants, skirts, and dresses are in places you won’t expect them to be.

  2. Avoid buying undergarments and hats! Not everyone is clean and not everything is washed! Hair and others’ bodies are not our own, which sometimes results in contaminated items. Gross.

  3. Look in the kids section! I know we all have different bodies and we are all different shapes and sizes, but all sizes of kid’s t-shirts can be cropped, and pieces of other articles of clothing can be reworked.

  4. Have a 3 Item Goal. Thrifting is often super cheap, but you do not need to buy every item you see. Pick 3 different clothing items that you want, and search hard for the perfect ones. One full outfit example would be:

    — A tank top

    — A mini-skirt

    — A pair of black wedge boots

  5. Shop accessories! The perfect outfit does not exist, so personalize yours and make them your own! Neck jewelry, belts, waste jewelry, boot covers, and rings are some of the best accessories to help complete your outfit. Do not be hesitant to embrace your style by accessorizing!

Thrifting should be fun, not stressful! One way to avoid stressing over too much stuff to choose from is to remember the goal. Instead of becoming overwhelmed, let this serve as a benefit to you. Everything you want can be found in one place! Your entire outfit can be thrifted, tried on, and bought together. This hobby has easily become a passion of mine, as I feel it is so important to be able to wear anything you are most comfortable in.

There is so much joy in thrifting because you are taking something worn and personalizing it. Making something “old” something new to you is the best feeling. If you ever feel that there isn’t anything for you in a thrift store— look again! Anything can be restitched to fit a new-sized body and can be just as beautiful as the original. The next time you are out and you want something affordable and worthwhile, go thrifting! This kind of shopping is the best way to bring out your true sense of style, without breaking the bank!
