Buzzcut Szn
As the spring flowers slowly begin to dance again, the air is filled with a sense of newness and curiosity that is taking everyone with temptation. Almost innately, everyone begins to yearn for a sort of change during this particular birth of a new season. Some of us will do the painful purge to our closets and call it “spring cleaning” just so there’s an excuse to buy a new wardrobe. For some, this is the prime time to re-download your favorite dating app and search for a new relationship. As someone who observes the beginning of spring by watching the flowers on the trees liven with their color again, it is always the subtle things that remind me a new season has begun. The gentle sway all creations make when the Earth begins to wake up after a long winter. This season, I’ve taken notice of a very feverish trend going around on media and in surrounding communities: buzzcuts.
Buzzcuts are all the rage this Spring. While some have been recognizing this shift in the season by buzzing their heads for years, others are using this time as a space to let go of their hair and free themselves of social boundaries for the first time. Everyone seems to be going feral for a buzzcut lately. It must be that the liberation that takes place when you run the clippers through your hair is as contagious as it is addicting. Leaving a version of yourself behind with the dreariness of winter is a sweet sendoff of the cold weather.
Buzzcuts hold so much expression and attitude. For the male demographic, buzzcuts are a popular way to give a drastic change with lots of personality. It is so important for men to be able to have this form of drastic change and daring taste. Unfortunately, men are not privileged with marketing that encourages them to express themselves through their clothes or hair the way women are. Often, men are expected to stay very close to their “fixed” level of comfort, and it is difficult to fluctuate outside of that box. Buzzcuts give men a middle finger to throw at society; a rebellion of a haircut that leaves them with a new canvas.
While this change in hairdo is special to men because it uproots social expectations, this haircut is still for everyone. It allows a certain edge for people to take with them when they buzz their heads. As they’ve grown more popular, people have been finding ways to make the change even more creative and expressive with art and color. Buzzcuts are more than just a practical cut for the warmer months. They are a way to own more of yourself than you did before, and the buzzcut can easily be the greatest form of self-care for the right person. So, if you’re feeling called to a change this season, it may be time to grab the clippers and give yourself a new look.
