Your Next Makeup Eye-Catcher
Recently, a lot of people have been drawn to a natural, “no-makeup” makeup look. I absolutely love the intention of leaving natural facial features intact, but I also feel nostalgic for the layered looks that amplify anything possible. Here are three techniques that I am especially fond of for personal reasons; even though these trends are in the past, I think they can still pop right now.
Smoky Eyes
Who doesn’t remember this insane trend in middle school? I remember trying to copy this look so many times for school events, and obviously it looked odd on my 12-year-old face. However, there is something timeless in Avril Lavigne’s smoky eyes. Whenever she goes for a heavy upper face look, she always uses a nude or softer lipstick so her lips do not take away the spotlight of her eyes. The sense of balance frames her face well and augments the features she wants to emphasize. If you want to go for a full smoky eye look, remember to mellow down other parts of your look. You are the next center of attention.
Blurred Lips
This trend was a big hit a couple of years ago because it creates this foggy, mysterious and sensual vibe. It faded because people felt as if there was not enough emphasis on their lips. But I think it could work very well with the trend we just discussed — smoky eyes. It could also pair very well with a natural look if the color is close to your natural lip color. The goal is gentleness, and to be unintentionally seductive. Try it for your next date.
Bold Lips
Confession time: I went through a red lipstick phase in high school where I wore it every single day to school. I don’t know how I looked, but I think bold lips definitely need sharper features to complement its audaciousness. Define your brows a little darker and give the mascara an extra layer. And make sure you put it on every part of your lips so your smile catches all admirers. If Doris Day rocked it in Hollywood, why can’t you tomorrow?
What I don’t love about trends is its ephemeralness that buries the look even though there is nothing wrong with it. Makeup evolves constantly. We can make a trend go viral overnight, but we also retire a look ruthlessly. Sometimes, when we reassess what’s popular in the past, new insights might arise. I want you to explore past makeup features and incorporate them into your look. While you are trying to be innovative in your makeup routine, look to the past for inspiration.
