Volume Never Dies

We all know and love the iconic 80s blowouts, with their endless bounce and impressive volume. Striking hair trends of the 80s have made their way back into 2023, and we are all suddenly buying hair rollers on Amazon. We previously shifted away from voluminous hair in the early 2000s when pin-straight hair was the popular look, but no need to fret- volume is back.

If you’re anything like me, you have been straightening your hair to a crisp for the past six years, so it’s been an adjustment trying to master this bouncy blow-dry. It’s time to say goodbye to the CHI flat iron and hello to the Dyson Air-wrap. If you’re looking for a guide to achieving the perfect blowout,

Step One: Prep the Hair. Believe it or not, heat protectants, oils, and shine sprays all help you in achieving the best blowout with minimal damage to your hair. Heat protectants are crucial in order to create a barrier between the styling tool and the hair itself. We all want that volume, so we must take steps to keep our hair healthy and full. My personal favorite is the Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Mist. This product not only smells delightful, but it gives my hair an unbeatable shine when sprayed directly before blow-drying. It’s time to replace our hair gel with our heat-protecting volume spray. Besides, fried hair was so 2008.

Step Two: Find the Round Brush. Whether you’re reaching for a blow-dryer with a round attachment, a Dyson Air-wrap air-circulating tool, or some hair rollers, a rounded tool is essential. People often think they can only achieve bouncy curls with an Air-wrap, but that is not the case. We all know that the best blowouts from the 80s came from some plastic hair rollers and a whole lot of patience. The key to a successful blowout is to utilize round brushes that flip your ends, creating the desired bouncy layers. One way is to start by blowing out the hair with a round brush and then wrapping each section in rollers for extra volume. If you are on a time crunch, hot rollers work wonders in speeding up the blowout process. If you have a round brush, a blow-dryer, and some rollers, you’re golden.

Step Three: The Bigger, The Better. After using the round brush, pinning your hair in rollers, and waiting as long as desired, it’s time to take the rollers out and see the finished product. The main tip I can’t stress enough is to take the rollers out by spinning them as you pull down. A common mistake many people make with rollers is simply pulling them out straight down and not twisting them. By twisting them, your hair will stay in the curled bounce that the rollers provide, rather than pulling out the hard work they have done. Remember, the longer you keep the rollers in and the gentler you are when taking them out, will help create a voluminous longlisting blowout. Now that you have some helpful tips, now all that is left is to embrace those curls and rock that volume!
