T.V. Fashionistas IRL
We know Halloween just passed, but who says it only has to be one day (or week) a year? Dressing up as your favorite iconic character can happen discreetly at any time your heart desires. Here a few of our favorite leading ladies with unmatched style to help inspire your everyday looks.
Rachel Green, "Friends"
Obviously, the place to start here is with Jennifer Aniston's character Rachel Green from "Friends." Known for her 90's style, Rachel has enough plaid skirts to last anyone a lifetime—and we can't say we're mad about it. The show's costume designer, Debra McGuire, reveled in an interview that she still gets emails about specific outfits some of the cast wore, noting that their characters couldn't even afford the clothes they were wearing. Recreating Rachel's looks is simple. Brands like Brandy Melville and Urban Outfitters constantly carry Rachel-esque pieces that are sure to add a 90s flair to your wardrobe.
Blair Waldorf, "Gossip Girl"
Hey there, Floridians. Strike Mag here. Not be too dramatic but Blair Waldorf invented the word 'preppy'. Heard you wanted to steal her look, so let's chat. Wearing bright pops of color spiced up Blair's outfits and made her school uniform look chic if you're into that sort of thing. Slip-on a designer headband, some pumps, a jacket with shoulder pads, and for the love of God, don't forget your Birkin on the way out. If you don't have that kind of coin (we won't tell anyone), Zara and Aritzia offer several wearable preppy pieces that can also function in other fits if you don't want to look like you're straight out of a Brooks Brothers catalog. XOXO, you can thank us later.
Hillary Banks, "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"
Known for her color coordinating and power suits, Hillary Banks had the confidence to match her effortless beauty and style. Accessories were key to many of her looks. Her love for hats and jewelry was evident on the show, where she was rarely seen without one or the other. If you're looking to spice your wardrobe up and get your shopaholic on, check out Lack of Color and Bagatiba for some fun pieces. Color coordinating can be interesting if you can incorporate it into your preexisting wardrobe, but don't let it overtake your style.
Male style on the big screen and T.V. typically includes suit centric days, with a few characters incorporating layered looks with flannels and t-shirts. Some guys twist in different eras and personas into their looks—like a bad boy and 70's aesthetics. Our best-dressed guys are T'Challa from "Black Panther," Sebastian Kydd from "The Carrie Diaries" (aka a show that should have never been canceled), and Blain Anderson from "Glee."
Some honorably mentioned characters who have creative looks are Cher from "Clueless" and Carrie from "Sex and the City" (you really thought we would leave her out?) if you're still looking for some inspo. Embodying your favorite characters is an effortless way to spice up your wardrobe when you feel like it's beginning to look drab. Having fun with your own personal style can make you feel more confident and lift your mood—and not just on one day of the year.
