The Rebirth of Colored Eyeliner

Beauty trends come and go as fast as lighting. However, history often repeats itself. Much like the bright eighties and decadent sixties, we are heading into an era of color, color eyeliner to be exact.

Color eyeliner first made its debut in the roaring twenties, advertised through Maybelline and Max Factor. However, the trend did not make its impact on the general public until Lucille Ball, from the I Love Lucy Show, was the face of Max Factor's newest makeup campaign sporting brown eyeliner. It wasn't until 1962 when colored eyeliner hit mainstream media by Max Factor revisiting the trend, this time adding more vibrant colors like blue, purple, and green. As the groovy sixties and seventies came to an end, the eighties sparked a new makeup revolution which expressed individuality. Artistic makeup took full force with androgynous Bowie using makeup to express his vibrancy, as well as the band KISS using heavy makeup that inspired media companies to produce more unique makeup looks for the general public. Today, we are revisiting the trend with our millennial take.

If you're scrolling through the beauty explore page of Instagram you will see the velocity of colored eyeliner through beauty gurus and everyday girls. Color liner is a great way to spark up a simple makeup look within seconds. It is a universal staple, leaving all skin tones with a bright surprise on the eyelid. We are sorry Marilyn, but your classic black cat-eye is officially a trend of the past. Color is where it is at.

There are a select few who we can credit the re-birth of this trend to. First, Fenty Beauty introduced colored liner last May with the Getting Hotter collection. The collection features three different sets, each containing three different bright eyeliners. Not just that, but Rhianna, sported the liners on her 2019 Harpers Bazaar cover. Simultaneously, HBO's newest sensation, Euphoria, premiered displaying a look book of new and unique makeup trends; many of them highlighted by color eyeliner. Maddie, one of the characters from Euphoria, became the forefront of the beauty scene accompanying colored liner with materials like chains, diamonds, and pearls. It was not long before their audience, as well as others, began to sport these looks as well.

If you're looking to hop on the trend. There are a few liners we are currently loving. As mentioned before Rhianna's collection, which features three sets: Baecae, Baeside, and Baewatch, is at the top of our list. Specifically, the shade Techno Beet from the Baewatch collection is our go-to for a night out. This bold berry is the perfect statement against an all-black outfit or can compliment rose shades like red, orange, and pink. It has an easy application that even novice eyeliner users will swipe on easily.

Our second favorite colored liner is Wet n Wild's Megaliner Liquid Eyeliner, which comes in four different colors: Black, Dark Brown, Voltage Blue, and Electric Purple. As a cheap buy, only costing you $3.50 a pop, these liners are a steal. Like Fenty, the brush is flexible and easy to control; it is the perfect starter liner. The shade we love the most is the Voltage Blue. It will certainly shock others with its bright liner and stand out shade.
