The Most Wonderful Looks from Your Favorite Winter Rom-Coms
Winter is back, and with it comes overcoats, cardigans and a flurry of seasonal rom-coms. Look no further for this year's chilly style inspo than the comfort films we know you have on repeat. From classic turtlenecks to grabbing a gaudy sweater, the famous faces we know and love know winter fashion so well that their looks still hold up today. Take your cues from Meg Ryan, Lindsey Lohan and Colin Firth, and bundle up.
WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
Arguably the best romantic comedy of all time, both titular characters serve some serious style. But before the wardrobe, we have to take a moment to appreciate Meg Ryan’s hair in this movie – her waves are the perfect accessory to her flawless fits. “When Harry Met Sally” is an ode to fall fits, witty banter and the classic sweater. Who can forget Harry and Sally’s first-date-woes-discussion in their contrasting sweater looks. Sally’s red jumper, black mini skirt and black tights are a lively elevation of Harry’s casual white cable-knit with jeans. This creme de la creme of rom coms pulled a Chris Evans in “Knives Out” 30 years before it even existed, yet again proving to be timeless as a classic sweater.
THE HOLIDAY
While both Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet may be taking some time to themselves at the beginning of “The Holiday,” their me-time was not the sweatpant kind. Diaz’s post-flight arrival in a brown and cream shearling coat kicks off this film with flair. Wandering the roads of England is already a dream in December, and Diaz does it in style. A classic white turtleneck sweater and black leather gloves make the cold look cool. Across the pond, Winslet enjoys a winter night in a jazzy black evening gown.
JUST MY LUCK
Ah, a homage to coats! Lindsey Lohan shows off in her outerwear from “Just My Luck,” daring us to move beyond black, brown and gray this winter. This wardrobe’s range can only be outdone by Mariah Carey’s vocals. From her pink, fur-trimmed number that is the envy of every mother and child, to the green coat variation of Kate Hudson’s look in “Almost Famous,” Lohan inspires us to fall into the color wheel. Wearing neutral colors is simply an affront on a monotonous winter landscape. When nature gives you a blank, snowy canvas, break out the colors. Top it off with some big sunglasses and bigger boots.
WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
One article argues the only thing Sandra Bullock’s character Lucy wears in this freezing flick is PJs. Nevertheless, let’s appreciate this slightly glamorized version of what to wear on the days when it’s almost too cold to look cute. But, Bullock never fully surrenders style, as she expertly intertwines warmth and wonder into her fits. For the days when all you want to be is warm, try Bullock’s tactic and channel your inner snuggie. Remember to grab a scarf.
BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY
The fits in this final film are a bit niche, and these outfits can really only be worn to ugly Christmas sweater parties. But it’s one of the best holiday traditions, so follow Colin Firth’s footsteps and look good at your worst. Whether you cozy into a green Rudolph turtleneck, a snowman-speckled red tie, or a Frosty sweater atop a white dress shirt, just don’t forget your drink. Colin never seems to.
Leave it to our comfort rom coms to always have our backs. Any situation that this winter brings, you’ll know how to dress for it. So bust out your cable-knit sweaters, fur-lined coats and tacky ties — the forecast is chilly and chic. When you dress this fashionable, the weather outside will feel far from frightful.
Strike Out,
