The Do’s and Don’ts of Skin Care Fridges

We tend to spend a lot of time and money on the products we use on our faces, as we should, because investing in oneself is important. However, we want to make sure that the products we use are being stored properly. I decided to look into whether skin care fridges actually do more than create an aesthetically pleasing photo on Instagram, and I’m here to report my findings. Skin care fridges do, in fact, alter the way in which products work, but sometimes negatively. So, it’s time to learn the do’s and don’ts of skin care fridges.

The Do’s: The Soothing

When we think of cold on our face, we think of refreshing, awakening, and soothing. Our jade rollers can definitely be kept in the fridge, as a cold massage will help to alleviate any inflammation. Eye creams that are kept cold can help to shrink the blood vessels under our eyes, so we can look and feel more awake. The cold will help to preserve our products with a short shelf life, such as our clay-based items, which tend to dry out. Vitamin C or retinol negatively react with oxygen, so storing these products away from excess oxygen exposure will extend their shelf life as well. Organic products, or those lacking in preservatives, will also thank the cold and your facial mists and sprays won’t be harmed by the fridge either. Cooling aloe or after-sun products can also be refrigerated; it will feel refreshing and help lessen the burning sensation of a sunburn.

Don’t: The Oils

Products that contain a lot of oil, like serums, need to stay room temperature. Their consistency can change in the cold and become harder to apply. It’s also important to make sure that the temperature of your fridge is just right. Freezing conditions can harm products. Storing your skin care fridge in the bathroom may also not be ideal, as the temperature of the room can fluctuate with a steamy shower.

So do we need skin care fridges? Not necessarily. Do they offer some benefits? Yes. Do they make for a really cute picture on Instagram? Yup. So go ahead and treat yourself, if your heart desires, but make sure to be aware of the do’s and don’ts!
