The Best Stylist is Your Inner Child

As kids, there are things we love, things that shape who we are as people. Growing up, we went through phases ranging from preppy to goth, constantly ebbing and flowing as life does simultaneously. Over the past few years, I have found myself going through different phases and down fashion rabbit holes, ending up obsessing over fashion aesthetics like “mermaid-core” and “fairy-core.”

When I create outfits that make me feel like a mermaid or scroll Pinterest for fairy-esque skirts, I am filled with a sense of excitement, joy, and creativity. While these aren’t the most practical styles of clothing, they can be the most fun, and isn’t that what it was like to be a kid?

I eventually realized that the excitement I felt around these different fashion aesthetics was little me coming out of hiding to dress like the mythical creatures that shaped who she was.

There is a glow that we have when we dress for our inner child. Figuring out where I can add a little bit of sparkle and magic to my outfit is my favorite part of each morning and usually makes my days a little better overall.

Fashion can be a really creative and easy way to tap into playfulness and not only lift your mood but your confidence as well. Adulthood can be taxing, and the stress of responsibilities can bleed into how we express ourselves or, more likely, don’t.

There are a multitude of different elements you can add to any outfit to give it that little bit of inner child sparkle, and the most fun part of it all: those elements are completely up to you. Dressing for your inner child is all about embracing nostalgic, fantastical, whimsical, nature-inspired aesthetics.

Here are some of my favorite ways to dress for my inner child: to channel your inner fairy, earth tones will be your best friend, and don’t forget to add lots of lace elements. When I want to channel my inner H2O mermaid, I’m not afraid to add some sparkles and shells. A mermaid glistens as she glides through life.

Fashion is one of the biggest ways we express ourselves in a world of constantly changing trends and creative outlets, so use it to your advantage. It can be just as powerful as your favorite mythical creatures.
