Sunscreen: The Closest Thing to Drinking From The Fountain of Youth
Every now and then I can still hear the piercing scream of my mother telling me to reapply my sunscreen from across the beach. Lathering the sticky white globs across my body, my mother coated my face in Coppertone Sport. It was around this time that my hatred for sunscreen developed.
Every time I got a whiff of the potent chemical smell, my fight or flight kicked in. There was always something horrifying about having to reapply sunscreen. Having the sticky white substance visible on my cheeks was my worst nightmare.
However, as I grew older, I carried my mothers words with me. It was not until recently that I realized I actually do need to reapply my sunscreen. Because who wants wrinkles?
Today, multiple skincare and beauty brands have developed countless sunscreen products that leave your skin glowing and healthy. Coming in foundations, moisturizers, powders and oils, the advancements made in the sunscreen industry would have my mother shedding tears of joy.
If it's so easy to wear products containing a bit of SPF, why are we not utilizing them? I know most of us, including myself, love a good summer tan. I'll be the first to admit, on a day with a high UV, I find myself neglecting the sunblock and reaching for the tanning oil. But, in retrospect, one good tan does not outweigh a lifetime of wrinkles and skin cancer.
Thinking back on my mother’s words, she was completely right. Reapplying sunscreen is truly the best thing you can do for yourself. With benefits like even-toned complexion, protection against premature aging and reduced risk of cancer, I'd say it's time to ditch the tanning beds.
And let's be honest, the tan has been out since 2016 anyways. As the no makeup-makeup look takes over, the craze for glowing, natural, dewy skin is prominent now more than ever. And the best thing to help achieve dewy skin? Sunscreen.
Looking at people like Beyonce and Jennifer Aniston, it's hard not to question what their beauty secrets are. Have they drunk from the fountain of youth? Probably not. But, I would not doubt that they use a nice sunblock everyday.
So, as we prepare for spring break, remember to lather up. Here are some recommended everyday sunscreens that will give you that Beyonce glow forever:
