Strike's Guide to Beauty Gurus

Through the duo of Instagram and YouTube, the makeup community, whose members are dubbed “Beauty Gurus,” is growing like wildfire. It’s pretty difficult to keep up with all the new talent that is constantly flooding the scene, but here are a few tried-and-true gurus that are sure to help you achieve whatever makeup look you are trying to execute.

For the YouTuber category, we have a few to chat about. Let’s start with Jackie Aina (Jackie, Jackie, Jackie, Jackie), who consistently serves us looks head to toe—but her makeup it always fabulous. With nearly 3 million subscribers, she is a great person to watch for perfecting your base makeup, plus fun, wearable color eye looks. Some great products that she turned us on to for winter and spring are Two Faced’s concealer (so hydrating, so full converge, a real holy grail product) and Two Faced’s Born This Way foundation.

Another guru that is no stranger to blending or glowing is Jaclyn Hill. If you’re a beginner who needs some help on knowing where to start with makeup, she is a great option for learning. Her channel consists of lots of tutorials, which are super in-depth and helpful. With a variety of both everyday colors and bright hues, her eyeshadow pallet is perfect for new-comers who want to experiment with various eye looks (and is really as good as everyone claims it is). If you aren’t new to the makeup scene, Jaclyn is still a good watch for interesting new techniques. Products she loves are the Lilah B. face mist and the HourGlass setting powder—a duo that will have you looking hydrated in the dry months of winter.

Desi Perkins is another beauty that we recommend watching. Not only is her voice soothing, but she has perfected her routine and always looks just the right amount of dewy. Her looks are usually simple and easy to wear everyday—perfect for those “no-makeup-makeup” looks. Similar to Desi, Vouge’s YouTube series “Beauty Secrets” is a fun to watch for a quick tip (or, if you’re nosey like us, to see how your favorite celebrity does their makeup). Featuring many iconic faces, the series is a go-to while snacking in the afternoon or for some glowy inspo.

If you’re in the need for that “your-skin-but-better” look, check out these videos to get the ball rolling on your new look—but if you love a true glam, the other gurus are probably a better suit for you.

The Instagram beauty world is more about inspiration than tutorials. Patrick Ta is a favorite for the dewy trend. A celebrity makeup artist, Ta specializes in bold (yet soft at the same time, you got to look at it to understand) eye looks and dewy skin that will have you wanting to replicate the look for your next date night.

For avant-garde wearable, check out Celine Bernaerts whose talent speaks for itself. She also has a YouTube channel with a smaller following for quick tips to achieve her edgy looks. Her bold, straight off the runway vibe will have blending your eyeshadow out in ways you never thought would look good, adding a cool statement to your look.

Finally, we have to mention Pat McGrath. An iconic brand and person, her gram will have you coveting her products and the looks she creates (is anyone else still reeling over those stunning Versace looks or is it just us?). Even though we could easily sit here for hours discussing the makeup community, we have to go and try to master Jaclyn’s smokey eye and Patrick’s glowy cheeks—and you should, too!
