Staying Stylish While You Travel

Just because you live out of a suitcase doesn’t mean you have to look like it. The allure of long-term travel post-graduation is a tempting one, and it should be encouraged for all young adults who are not quite ready to join the workforce. Fortunately, it is easier than ever to travel far and wide without breaking the bank, through Workaway, social media endorsements, hostels, and some serious planning and budgeting. Here are some tips for keeping your style while traveling the world.

Let’s start with the basics (literally). Pack the simple stuff at your own discretion based on the climates, you will be in - adding coats, pants, and cold protection as needed - and remember to always leave a little room for any unique, hand-made clothing that you find along the way.

Jeans, of course, are the staple piece in most closets and are incredibly easy to dress up or down. For a relaxed feel and maximum style, I would recommend a pair of loose, unripped, light-wash jeans paired with a tank and a cool button-up or light jacket on top.

Leggings are also a strong option as the go-to comfort item for active days; a must in your suitcase if you plan on hiking or backpacking! While a tight tank and sneakers are always viable activewear options, you can also try to layer undershirts and sweaters for a less sporty look.

Additionally, never underestimate the power of a tank top. Tank tops are easily condensed into a suitcase, and they go great with any bottoms.

Short, tight, tanks pair well with a long skirt or baggy jeans, while a flowier, racerback style with leggings is an ideal look for an adventurous hike. These tops are especially susceptible to the greatness of accessories, so don’t be afraid to add on as many extras as you want.

Skirts can be a really strong option, or a poor one. Even if you plan to go out, avoid packing nice skirts, as they often come with very few top options. Instead, go for a beachy mini skirt or more of a flowy, boho look. These pair well with just about everything, from bikini tops to sweaters and can be styled very easily. Additionally, a sundress can be an effortless, one-and-done option for an outfit that flatters and provides comfort on warm days. Much more adaptable than a loud skirt or evening dress, pair a sundress with a jacket or a shirt on top for a simple statement.

Don’t forget to accessorize! Scarves are one of my favorite pieces because of their versatility and because they take up so little space. Wrap a scarf around the middle of a dress, use it as an ascot, a headband, or just around your neck for a little touch of personality. Hats and sunglasses are cute and very functional for sun protection; throw a bucket hat, straw sun hat, or newsboy cap on to compliment any look. The last important accessory is jewelry. As a travel outfit usually consists of basics, wearing three to five layered necklaces and/or a few rings can completely elevate the vibe of an outfit and draw attention to your style.

Seeing the world is a must for many people in their 20s and, while you will definitely have to make a few style sacrifices, there are countless ways to look fashionable regardless of the luggage space you have. Make sure to pack jeans, leggings, tank tops, skirts, dresses, and accessories, and every stage of your epic adventure will be a photo-worthy success.

Safe travels!
