Certainty of the Uncertain
What was it like to grow up in a time when children could be children?
When kids played outside fearlessly
And were ignorant to the cruelties of the world.
When parents didn’t worry if their child would come home from school
And a car backfiring didn’t make them shutter.
When a child’s tantrum wasn’t solved with a tablet
And smart phones weren’t a 10th birthday present.
When icebergs weren’t melting
And forests weren’t burning to the ground.
When school wasn’t taught through a computer screen
And kids didn’t know how to wear a face mask.
When productivity didn’t reflect your worth
And relaxing wasn’t a character flaw.
When currency was made of metal or paper
And reality wasn’t virtual.
When the leaders of countries were smart and just
And citizens believed in science.
When every day wasn’t clouded by the constant fear of world war or natural disaster or another pandemic,
And children could be children.
Nothing is normal now.
Nothing is certain.
The only certainty is that nothing is certain.
But our parents grew up in trying times
As did generations before them.
They learned to move forward
As we will too,
And our kids after that.
In the face of adversity, we grow stronger,
And come together.
The world is filled with uncertainty,
But we will certainly be okay.
