Say Goodbye to Your Urban Corset; MM6 Maison Margiela Declares the Boxy Look is in for Fall 2023

Hopefully, you live somewhere cold because the MM6 team has declared it to be the season of layering. A secondary line created by Maison Margiela in 1988, MM6 Maison Margiela has set the tone for next season as dark, sultry, and bulky.

This collection is said to be a play of surfaces and perception, as the looks are constructed with the same methodology as a cadavre exquis; a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled, and each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person contributed.  According to MM6 Maison Margiela, the unexpected fabric textures and treatments are irreverently spliced, disrupting preconceived associations of particular garments, textiles, and silhouettes.

The show took place in Milan this morning, and of course, the runway looked like it was in Batman’s Bat Cave. All black everything with slight rave-like music made me feel like I needed this MM6 collection ASAP to look as cool as the models when I walk to class. Everyone looked so effortlessly put together; meanwhile, I was watching the show in my pajamas, head bobbing to the music like I didn’t have class in thirty minutes.

A common trend I’ve seen popping up on my timeline made an appearance on the runway: the layering of skirts and dresses over jeans. Whether you like it or not, it’s already upon us. But before you dig your embellished jeans and strapless midi dresses out of your closet, this new wave of layering is much more elevated. So put it all back in the closet. Now.

If you choose to attempt this look in 2023, opt for loose, wide-leg jeans to elongate your body. Pair it with a form-fitting mini skirt and an oversized blazer on top. If you decide to leave the house in this outfit, consider a knee-high work boot to finish your look. The same can be done with a dress if you so choose: loose, wide-leg jeans, mini dress, oversized blazer on top. Yes, an oversized blazer is required for both looks.

Or maybe go for some metallics. Silver metallic boots and pants paired with neutral-colored tops graced my eyes today. Aside from two models wearing blue and turquoise colored gloves to break up the rest of their neutral-colored outfits, minimal color was shown in the collection. If Margiela says it's only neutrals all season, I’ll listen. Grey, black, brown, creme and white are the only colors allowed in your closet.

For accessories, shoulder bags are out. It’s time to embrace the top handle and “mom” style tote bag. Big bags have been overshadowed by the more preferred shoulder bag and micro bag for the last three seasons but have now made a re-appearance on runways this season like MM6, Emporio Armani, and Fendi. All of these have been shown in neutral colors (because neutrals match everything, duh).

Sleek and sexy silhouettes were also seen today, accompanied by more over-the-knee, tall boots. So say goodbye to your Urban Outfitters corset top and tight leather boots because this Fall is all about embracing the oversized and boxy. Big work boots that look too wide for your leg are what’s IN, and looking like you don’t know what size you wear is sure to get you some of those double-takes MM6 wants.

So, if your family wants to give you dirty looks this Fall because your clothes and shoes are too big, let them. Big, boxy, oversized, and sleek is what you can expect to be trending all season, and whether you choose to participate or not , so is layering.
