Romanticizing Tallahassee

To make (something) seem better or more appealing than it really is.

Tallahassee isn’t all that bad. Sure, the closest beach is an hour away, and the only thing to do seems like nightlife, but there are many ways to romanticize this lovely town. I find myself stuck in a habit when I’m in Tallahassee—wake up, go to class, somehow eat in between my classes, do homework, go to bed, repeat. Being stuck in a routine can make your living situation feel bland. By implementing small steps into your everyday routine, you can unveil all the history and culture that Tallahassee has to offer as you make your days feel a bit more riveting.

I am lucky enough to have my car with me in college, but walking has recently become my favorite activity. Besides walking to class, I have also started walking to the grocery store, checking out local coffee shops, and taking afternoon walks around campus. I also love walking around the Railroad Art District and exploring all of the unique and hidden shops they have there! The key to mastering a walk comes down to what you listen to. I have recently gotten into making playlists, which is a great way to spice up your walks to class. Listening to music while walking can be a great way to escape your busy schedule and find time for yourself.

Spend some time outdoors! Recently, we have been blessed with amazing weather. Take this opportunity to lay by the pool or visit Cascades Park. This is something that my friends and I love doing! The peace and quiet at Cascades Park can be a relaxing escape during a hectic school week. Pick up a good book, grab some friends, stock up on all your favorite snacks, and head outdoors!

Try new restaurants or coffee shops! It’s easy to go to your favorite place to study, but switch things up by trying out a new local restaurant or coffee shop. This may seem small but branching out and exploring new places around Tallahassee can help break the repetitive routine. One thing I love about Tallahassee is the plethora of unique restaurants. Here is a list of some of my go-to spots!

Good Berry – for some yummy acai bowls!

Redeye Coffee – for an afternoon pick me up! Be sure to try their lavender vanilla latte!

The Bark – Located in the Railroad Art district, they have great vegetarian lunch options.

So Dough Baking co. – If looking to crave your sweet tooth, definitely head to So Dough for amazing pastries!

Tallahassee is also home to a vibrant music scene! The Bark and The Muse host many local Tallahassee bands, like Not Milk, Kids on Call Street, and Her New Knife. So whenever you have some downtime, definitely head over to one of these local businesses to hear some of Tallahassee’s music culture!

I have grown to love Tallahassee, and exploring the town outside of the Florida State campus has helped show me how much this town has to offer. Tallahassee is far more than just a college town, it is rich in history, culture, and art, so definitely branch out and try all the local spots!
