Pam & Tommy: Exposed
Clips and videos of Hulu’s new show Pam & Tommy have been swirling around the internet since its release on February 2nd. It has raised many questions about who Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee really are and why their relationship was so iconic. Why did they make the headlines in so many ‘90s tabloids?
While Pam and Tommy were each famous before meeting each other, the couple’s popularity seemed to double after their spontaneous marriage in 1995. Pamela Anderson is an actress and model best known for her performances in Baywatch and Home Improvements. Meanwhile, Tommy Lee is a drummer for the rock band Mötley Crüe.
They initially met at the Hollywood club Sanctuary on New Year’s Eve, 1994. Tommy was immediately fascinated by Pam’s beauty. She told Movieline that the very night they met, “He came up, grabbed me and licked my face.” From the start, their relationship was electric. Just six weeks after their first encounter, Tommy followed Pam to Mexico, where she was traveling for a photoshoot. After just four days together, the couple got married and decided to ink one another's name on their ring fingers.
This was shocking to many as Tommy was previously known to be occupied with groupies, going on drinking benders, and doing a lot of drugs. Because of his past, the media quickly assumed that Tommy was a bad husband. The paparazzi harassed the couple to uncover if their relationship was as exhilarating as it seemed, and with so many eyes on them, their relationship began to spiral.
Unfortunately, the release of their stolen sex tape did not help with the media’s speculation. After Pam and Tommy got married, they decided to remodel a home in Malibu. However, they were in no way ready to have this be an ordinary home; they made so many crazy demands that the construction workers quickly became aggravated.
When electrician Rand Gauthier did not live up to their expectations, they fired him and did not pay for his labor or the resources he used to construct the home, which amounted to nearly $20,000. Deeply infuriated, Gauthier broke into Pam and Tommy’s household to steal a safe from their garage. Although, he would later discover he had stumbled upon their X-rated tape.
Tommy tried to sue Gauthier and accomplices in a $10 million lawsuit, but the video still found its way onto the internet. The couple did not profit from its release and were hesitant towards the topic in interviews. Pam and Tommy’s sensitivity was also heightened because they were beginning to raise their two children, Brandon and Dylan—not to mention Tommy already had a hard time balancing being a father and a notorious rockstar.
As stress began to inflate, the two would later be seen fighting in many shots captured by the paparazzi. Eventually, the tension was confirmed when Tommy was arrested in 1998 under felony spousal abuse charges for kicking Pamela on her backside while holding her son Dylan. After the encounter, Pamela was found with red marks and a broken nail. She called the police on him, and within a few days, she filed for divorce. In recent years, Pam has claimed Tommy left a negative impact on her children and their family, stating that he is “consistently the center of sadness, drama, and confusion.”
Although their flame fizzled out and they are no longer together, Pam and Tommy claimed to have found true love in one another. Currently, Tommy Lee is married to Brittany Furlan, a social media influencer, while Pam recently filed for divorce from Dan Hayhurst, a bodyguard that she fell in love with during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the long run, it is fair to say that Pam and Tommy’s relationship was iconic at the least. However, their constant invasion of privacy from the paparazzi quickly caused frustrations. Some tabloids claim the relationship was toxic and abusive, while others paint it as the nation’s best love story. Despite what you may think of their relationship, they were once two of the world’s biggest sex symbols, and their bond is still a topic of conversation today.
