My Curls Dropped

Disclaimer: Brushes are not welcome here. Combs only.

Growing up, having curls felt as though your hair had a constant (comb) to pick with you. There was never enough information circling about how to care for them, which made it nearly impossible to have a decent day. Especially as a young girl, the state of my hair in the mornings directly affected my ability to conquer the day. There is no frustration quite like that of curls that won't cooperate– do you really have curls if you haven't cried in the mirror waving your hairbrush to your head!? (hoping that's a universal experience). Instead of suppressing your curl pattern with heat and chemical treatments, I say it’s time to educate yourselves. Treat yo’ curls, and treat ‘em right.

Half the battle is finding the right products. Yuka is a great app to double check the quality of your hair care. Lucky for you Strike readers, I have 21 years under my belt to share what’s worked best for me. Acquiring a sound curl routine is not for the faint of heart, but it is certainly worth the investment– financially and timewise. It contributes to much more than a frizz free day, but a frizz free life. Frizz being the stress that comes with not feeling your best.

Briogeo is an amazing line for clean hair products that do as promised. More specifically I would like to highlight:

Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Leave-In Defining Creme

This holds a curl better than any product I have tried without leaving your hair crunchy. If you want definition, you want Briogeo.

Place a dollop in your hand and rub it in from ends to roots, followed with a comb through and a scrunch.

Miss Jessie's Multicultural Curls - Hair Lotion

Miss Jessie, oh how I love you. This is a great product for a lighter hold and it smells as good as it makes your curl bounce. This is a fantastic staple product that you can put on wet or damp hair– or anytime you need a quick rescue. Miss Jessie will always save the day.

This is your new holy grail. Trust.

Color Wow Dream Coat for Curly Hair

WOW! No really, that's the name. The WOW! Dream Coat For Curly Hair is the perfect final step to add between layers on wet hair.

The products work best on wet hair, though it's not wholly necessary– just a seasoned vet’s recommendation. The rest is up to you.

Some additional tips:

Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo once a week, which will strip your hair of all the negative build-up and allow it to better absorb the product.

I owe these products more than just a coiled curl, but self confidence and a new found love for natural beauty. You’re in good hands with these products, prepare for a frizz-free curly girl life.
