Luxury Meets Modern Minimalism in Michael Kors FW24 Collection

Timeless is one of the many words used to describe Michael Kors’ Fall/Winter 2024 collection.

Michael Kors showcased their new collection on Tuesday afternoon. They had a packed guest list, with A-list celebrities such as editor-in-chief of American Vogue, THE Anna Wintour, Hollywood actresses Blake Lively and Nina Dobrev, musician Chase Hudson, and influencer Anastasia Karanikolaou (@stassiebaby) in the audience.

To kick off the show, the instrumental chords of Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” rang through the speakers of the venue as the models began to present this “timeless” collection. The venue was a mirror-filled room lit by bright white overhead lighting with a white spiral staircase prominently standing in the middle. Each model strutted down the staircase, and despite one notable trip, all walked seamlessly down the steps and swiftly around the room.

Although an Instagram teaser released by Michael Kors on Saturday, February 10th, gave the viewer an expectation of a metallic, futuristic collection, the show was surprisingly filled with more elevated basics, drawing inspiration from the 90s. While the expected metallics did appear in the show, they were mostly filled with “banker, charcoal and black…crisp midnight and ivory…dusty makeup tints of shell and blush,” as Kors wrote in his statement on the collection.

Trench coats, pointed-toe heels, and loafers; asymmetric midi dresses and skirts, chunky glasses and square mini purses were the most reoccurring items within the show.

A couple of other notable styles and themes that appeared throughout the show were fur coats, turtle necks, streetwear, plaid, oversized tote bags, and lace.  A key factor in this presentation was layering. The use of coats, scarves, and belts added dimension to a multitude of outfits.

This collection draws back to Kor's ideals for his older collections. In 1996, Micahel Kors himself said, “Clean lines have greater longevity, which women appreciate, and to which they can add their own personality,” and this collection holds true to that statement. Kors has been straying away from logos and trends for a couple of years, which is giving his pieces the longevity factor.

But is it minimalistic, or is it boring? While each complete outfit looked stunning, the collection seemed to lack originality. The models looked as if they were walking the streets of the Upper East Side rather than debuting something new.

However, the minimalism movement has been in for quite some time for clothing and works very well if accessorized properly. The bags and shoes were certainly the main characters for most of the show.

In the fall and winter of 2024, it can be expected to see the basic, neutral trend continue for clothing and just slightly elevated with the right bag, sunglass or bold lip color. Think business casual meets the “cool girl aesthetic.”

Overall, this fashion show left the audience applauding, the press raving, and the people wanting more. The interchangeable collection pieces range from everyday wear to nightlife chic, leaving a high demand. Not only does this collection have the potential to draw consumers from all over the world, but if Kors’ track record reigns true, it will stand the test of time.
