Is Y2K Here to Stay?

Get in, girl! We’re going to the 2000s!

Thinking of the late 90s and early 2000s tends to invoke a strong sense of nostalgia within a majority of human beings, regardless of whether they were alive during that period or not. The fashion icons of the day, such as Britney Spears, Ashley Tisdale, and Miley Cyrus, combined items like cowboy hats, denim, and studded belts to create memorable (and sometimes questionable) outfits. Bright colors and loud fonts dominated this era, creating a space where the adage rang true: “go big or go home!” Although that day and age are long gone, there is a simple solution for all those who are longing for the past. Just go shopping!

Regardless of whether you’re ready or not, 2000s fashion has returned! Depending on your age, you might feel a sense of excitement or embarrassment when reflecting upon your previous fashion choices, for they are now coming back into the light. However, one question remains: will this fashion trend be just another phase, or is Y2K truly here to stay with us? To properly answer that, we will need to take a detailed journey through the current wardrobe of today’s young adults, curated by Pinterest, Disney Channel, and MTV, respectively.

Denim on Denim!

Oh, the 2001 American Music Awards! Neither the performances nor the awards are truly as memorable as the fashion statements that were made. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears made headlines when they arrived in all-denim outfits, adorned with sparkling silver jewelry. Although a few celebrities have attempted to replicate this look (we see you, Katy Perry!), no one has done it quite like them.

No matter what anybody says, the denim on denim trend has not died out yet. This simple look is effortlessly rocked by average citizens and celebrities alike, showing us all that pairing a denim jacket with denim jeans should not result in a call to the fashion police.

Tiny Little Handbags

Forget The Return of the Jedi, I’m all about the return of the tiny handbag! Popular fashion brands like Dior and Louis Vuitton caught everyone’s eye with the creation of their respective saddlebags and logo bags. Although these purses are barely large enough to stuff all of your essentials in (forget about trying to fit your puppy in there!), they carry an irresistible aura of wealth and power. This trend has had a recent resurgence as of late, popping up at the 2019 Paris Fashion Week and even on Lizzo’s hand at the American Music Awards.

Monograms

For better or for worse, logomania is back! The stars of the early 2000s were notorious for boldly broadcasting exactly where they got their clothes from. This is a branch of product placement, as everyone in those days was the equivalent of a walking advertisement. Nowadays, people wear monograms because they are aesthetically pleasing and can add an edge to your newest Instagram post!

Although some may disagree, I believe that the Y2K fashion style has too big of a hold on popular culture to disappear any time soon. We are in the second wave of 2000s fashion, and I, for one, am thrilled! If you’ll excuse me, I have to go change into my Juicy Couture Target tracksuit and pretend that I am the fifth member of Destiny’s Child.
