Ignoring Labels: Doja Cat’s Paris Fashion Week Makeup Lookbook

Doja Cat has made it clear that she isn't afraid to push boundaries on what is expected of her or how she “should” act. Although many might consider her a “pop princess”, it is undeniable that she refuses to be compartmentalized into one, sole genre. This is not only true for her music, but it is evident in her fashion and beauty choices as well her looks at the 2022 Paris Fashion Week were no exception. Her authenticity and bold stylistic expression radiated from her looks at the A.W.A.K.E Mode and Monot collection shows, channeling elements of avant-garde mixed with a surrealist touch. From giving off an alien-esque aesthetic to painting her entire body in shimmering gold, Doja Cat took camp fashion and makeup to an entirely different level this week. For a look to be considered camp, it should be an exaggerated, kitschy amalgamation that’s simultaneously ironic while also aesthetically pleasing. That’s the beauty and allure surrounding camp looks: there are no set rules to achieve it, but it does require you to think outside of the box and play with creativity. In all these looks, it is evident that Doja is rejecting outdated beauty standards and embracing raw, unfiltered self-expression. In this five stellar makeup looks from Paris Fashion Week, Doja Cat quite literally broke the internet and reminded us that she is not afraid to turn heads.

1. Alien Superstar

The 26-year-old Kiss Me More star captivated audiences with this alien-chic makeup look created by none other than makeup-artist Laurel Charleston. For Vivienne Westwood’s Spring/Summer exhibition, she gave an extraterrestrial feel with her entire face being painted white, heavily contoured with a deep royal blue, and topped with a blood-red lip. The unearthly vibe that exudes from this look was only heightened by her long, coffin nails, black sleeve-like arm paint, and the sleek shape of her hair. Although some said she resembled a “smurf”. I was dazzled by this look and even more impressed by her boldness to step outside of the ordinary.

2. Golden Globe Goddess

Quite literally embodying a golden-globe award almost to the point where she was unrecognizable, Doja Cat turned heads while being painted entirely gold in this look she wore to A.W.A.K.E. mode. Although she was met with both admiration and criticism on this look that was also done by Charleston, she was quick to defend her stylistic choice by stating that she “wasn’t trying to look sexy or attractive.” Doja aims for artistic expression rather than reducing herself to only being conventionally attractive for the media or male gaze, something I think should be celebrated and emulated by more artists. She was a radiant, metallic beam of light with this makeup look, and her energy was also up-to-par. With her nails also metallic gold and her wardrobe matching the color scheme, she succeeded in creating a cohesive, iconic look.

3. Siren Eyes at Vivienne Westwood

Perhaps my favorite look so far, Doja seems to put you into a trance with her heavy, black graphic eyeliner that Julia Fox would surely approve of. The intense eyeliner juxtaposes her tiny, micro-brow moment, creating a sharp contrast that is very pleasing to the eye. She topped the makeup look off with a classic, neutral brown-nude lippie that can pair with almost anything.

4. Surrealist Squiggles

For her makeup look at the Beyonce and Tiffany & Co party, Doja reminded us that nobody else is doing it like her. She had a bright and simple complexion, only for it to be squiggled over with exaggerated, black vertical makeup. Her nude lips, pencil-thin eyebrows, and fresh-faced skin once again contrast with this surrealist makeup aspect that captures the eye unlike anything else.

5. Givenchy Goth

At the Givenchy show on October 2nd, Doja Cat attended in a once-again captivating look in which she replaced her eyebrows with pearl-like metallic studs. She channeled gothic energy in this spooky look, with a heavy emphasis on her partially lined, jet-black lips. Although the rest of her makeup look is neutral, it allows for all the attention to go towards her eyebrows and lips. Her buzzcut also pairs beautifully with the look, adding to the full effect.
