I Don't Wanna Work Anymore: Goodbye 9-5!

In October, Tiktoker Brielle Asero, @brielleybell123, posted a video sharing her experience working a 9-5 job. She spoke candidly about how she has to commute to the city, which adds an extra hour to her workday, leaving her no time to live her life. The video has been circulating on social media, and some people have criticized her for complaining. However, others have related, expressing that the toxic subculture in the 9-5 work environment can be overwhelming for many.

"Work culture" has undergone a massive transformation in recent years, shaking up the traditional 9-5 that has been around for ages. A growing number of people are no longer content with the same old grind, and they're looking for a life that's not only about work but also about happiness and fulfillment. This is especially true for the younger generation. Gen Z leads the charge toward a new way of life where passion, purpose, and flexibility take center stage, leaving rigid structures and old-school thinking in the dust.

"The 9-5 schedule is crazy," says Brielle. "I don't have energy. How do you have friends? I don't have time for anything... I'm so stressed out."

For many people, the 9-5 work culture has become synonymous with a monotonous and unfulfilling lifestyle, often referred to as the "rat race." Rats in a maze have limited control over their direction and destiny, just as individuals in the rat race may feel constrained by societal expectations, workplace norms, and the pursuit of conventional success. The repetitive nature of commuting to work, performing tasks within a fixed timeframe, and then returning home day after day can leave individuals feeling trapped in a routine that offers little opportunity for personal growth, passion, or happiness.

Over the past few years, there has been a rise in alternative forms of work beyond the traditional job. Gen Z, a generation that has matured in the digital age, demonstrates tech-savviness and a willingness to embrace the evolution of communication and information-sharing technologically. Rather than resisting change, people value innovation and actively adapt to technological advancements. For Gen Z, remote work, digital platforms, and the ability to work from anywhere are indispensable components for a truly fulfilling work experience.

There is a strong entrepreneurial spirit, with many aspiring to create their own paths instead of conforming to corporate norms. According to a McKinsey & Company study, 31% of employees who left their jobs in the past six months did so to start a new business. The emergence of social media has played a pivotal role in redefining the professional landscape. Gen Z, in particular, is capitalizing on opportunities within social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. These platforms offer a unique avenue for individuals to carve out careers beyond the confines of traditional employment. Social media-based jobs have become increasingly prevalent, allowing individuals to use their creativity, personality, and expertise to build audiences and monetize their content.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought about a significant shift in how we perceive work. With remote work gaining traction, people are no longer confined to the traditional 9-5 office setup. Working from anywhere offers convenience and the freedom to prioritize personal fulfillment and work-life balance. The rise of technology has created many freelance opportunities, gig work, and remote positions that cater to new needs. As a result, people learn to balance work with other aspects of life.

Many people who still prefer the traditional 9-5 job are now focusing on pursuing their passions. Instead of getting trapped in a repetitive daily routine, individuals seek roles matching their interests and values. Companies that prioritize employee well-being, personal growth, and a positive work environment are now the preferred choice for those looking to find satisfaction within regular working hours.

Emphasis on mental health and well-being is a significant shift in the priorities of the younger generation. Gen Z has grown up in a world that is more aware of mental health issues and the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Burnout and stress can negatively affect physical and mental health. As a result, we must prioritize well-being over career advancement. This shift in priorities is also reflected in the types of roles that Gen Z pursues. People seek and expect jobs that foster a positive and supportive workplace culture where they feel valued and appreciated. A study done by Pew Research found that 82% of Gen Z will seek mental health days in their jobs. Now, people are less likely to tolerate toxic work environments or jobs that require them to sacrifice their personal lives for their careers.

There are dozens of studies and confessions by people striving to pivot from the corporate sphere. In an essay posted to Entrepreneur, people believe that we must move past the 9-5 to achieve success. So, here's to a life that means more than just work, where "work hard, play hard" is not just a motto but a manifesto. In the era of "bye-bye 9-5," we're not just leaving behind clock-watching and stuffy cubicles; we're ushering in a world where passion takes the lead.
