How to Dress like a Modern Day Bridgerton Character

Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s newest shows and is produced by Shonda Rhimes. If you have yet to watch the show, you are missing out to say the least. The show is an adaption of Julia Quinn’s steamy novels and is set during the Regency era in the UK. The season of the show follows multiple families including the Bridgertons and Featheringtons, all who have young women which have been introduced into the social scene in hopes of finding a husband.

While the show does have its historical discrepancies, like the fact that they played an instrumental version of Ariana Grande’s Thank you, Next at a ball, one thing they got right was the grandiose fashion of the time. Unfortunately, it is not socially acceptable to saunter about your day in a ball gown in corset, but here are some tips on how to create modern day outfits that will fulfill your Bridgerton dreams.

If you watched the show you may have noticed that each family has a different color scheme which is seen in their homes and wardrobes. The most noticeable being the Bridgerton and Featherington’s seemingly contrary colors. In order to begin piecing together your outfit, you must find what your color scheme is. Will you wear soft muted fine shades of blue and pink like the Bridgerton’s? Or more vibrant striking colors such as the Featherington’s bright green and yellows…

Moving on from the color scheme, the next step would be to decide what textures are needed. Throughout the show, some of the textures are silky satins, printed patterns, and tulle with lace or pearl appliques.

Now knowing the color and texture of the pieces needed, the next step would be to decide what the silhouette of the outfit is. To keep the same silhouette of the dresses on the show, the outfit should incorporate pieces that accentuate the shoulders and torso, are waisted very high, and while structured, are not very form fitting. Think square neck top with puffy sleeves and jean culottes. Another option is wearing a corset top to accentuate the torso along with high waisted mom jeans to keep a more relaxed silhouette on the bottom.

Before getting into where to find some of the pieces to create the perfect modern day Bridgerton outfit, everything must be tied together with accessories. The show features lots of jewels and pearls. The accessories come in the form of hair pieces such as brooches and dainty chokers with gems.

Finally, it is time to acquire all the pieces to construct the outfit. One can find tops that include corsets, square necks, and puffy sleeves on multiple online shopping sites. Some of those sites include PrettyLittleThing, and Missguided.

Some of my favorite places to buy bottoms such as culottes or mom jeans are Zara, ASOS, and H&M. While there are other options to use as bottoms for a Bridgerton outfit such as a skirt, I think wearing pants gives the outfit the modern flare of defying gender roles.

To finish off the outfit accessories can be found in many places but if looking online some options include Amazon and multiple Etsy shops. Some specific examples of accessories include chunky pearl headbands and dainty floral hair brooches.

In the end, there are a plethora of ways to put your own spin on the Bridgerton fashion. The most important part is feeling great about yourself in the outfit you pick and making sure Lady Whistledown does not catch you slipping.
