Four Black Owned Businesses You Must Shop At

When the month of February comes around, there are those of us that think Valentine’s, and there are those of us that think Black History Month. I like to think about both, but as a black girl, I can’t help but get more excited for Black History Month. It’s a whole month dedicated to celebrating the history and the efforts of people who look like me. Black History Month provides an opportunity for all the things that black people have done to be put on display. The world gets to see the creativity, hard work, and passion we have. Black people, black films, black art, and black fashion should always be appreciated, but the appreciation means even more in February. So, if you’re looking to join in on the celebrations and want to appreciate the endeavors and the work of black people, here’s a start. I give you four incredible black-owned businesses that you can (and should) buy from.

The Wrap Life

What started as a small effort in a kitchen in 2014 is now a popular brand with over 280 thousand followers on Instagram. The Wrap Life is a haircare brand that specializes in making its customers feel empowered and inspired, giving women everywhere confidence to wear their hair how they want. They sell wraps, “brandies”, and turbanettes in different colors, styles, and patterns. Their most fascinating design is the ‘Multi’ a 3 in 1 wrap that can be a headband, a face-covering, and a neck warmer. If you’re looking for a way to add some flair to your updo’s this store is for you.

OneDNA.Earth

This brand, located in Michigan, is one of the few clothing brands designing gender-neutral clothing. They are redefining fashion categories and the need for labels. Their most popular collection ‘women are powerful’ has this slogan available on tote bags, hoodies, and t-shirts. With 10% of proceeds going to good causes, the clothing brand demonstrates the importance of support. Visit their site and join their movement!

Mifland

Milfland is an American based company that makes apparel self-described as modern utilitarian. Despite this description, the brand has bright designs and colorways that allow them to stand out. They pride themselves on their unique branding. Besides their streetwear, they also sell leather goods such as backpacks, each one cut stitched by hand. For them, quality and care are of the utmost importance. From hoodies and sweats to structured purses and backpacks, Milfland will meet every one of your streetwear needs.

VSMINE

A British company, VSMINE is a clothing brand that prides its self on sophistication. It’s not your average athleisure, streetwear brand. Its pieces are beautifully made in nude and pastel hues. The brand’s name and mantra derive from competing with yourself. It’s all about detail and quality. According to them, their products are packaged and prepared with careful consideration. Shop here if you want your streetwear with more structure and sophistication.

As creators and originators of the trends we see in fashion today, black people are pioneers but they’re designs, brands, and contributions are often overlooked and under-supported. Black History Month is the time to show these black-owned businesses the and support they deserve and the four brands above are a good start.
