Finding Your Unique Style Without Worrying about the “Basics”
Through my journey of trying to find my style, I’ve come across countless videos on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram where influencers are trying to provide “advice” to those in my shoes.
One of the key things they talk about is finding good basic items to layer with. This felt like a no-brainer to me and I started investing in different styles of white, black and other neutral-colored tops. I had long sleeves, short sleeves, hoodies, zip-ups, sweaters and sweatshirts in a neutral color and a very “basic”/plain style. Of course, when fashion content creators are talking about basics, it’s to layer. Usually, but not limited to, staple pieces to make your outfit more “interesting” to an invisible entity. This is a problem because what you find interesting may not include having to layer your clothes with staple pieces.
However, that’s when I begin to wonder. Not everyone has the same basics as me or those that the influencers are talking about. People have different styles based on textures, colors, materials, shapes and other aspects of clothing. Given the fall season and winter approaching quickly as well, another concern is how durable the clothing is in the cold.
Though I am still in my journey of figuring out my style, I’ve learned that wearing more neutral colors, lots of solid color tops with different necklines, mixing different textures and a few staple pieces, are what make me most comfortable and happy. I’ve learned that I don’t like to accessorize a whole lot and I’ve also figured out what kinds of jewelry look best with my clothes and my skin. Of course, there was a lot of trial and error throughout this process. I used to wear a lot of rings and a lot of necklaces tried different styles throughout high school. Ultimately those weren’t things that made me feel like they were a part of “my style”.
What may be basic to me, might just be boring for someone else. The necessity of basics transcends many and some people are stuck on the dilemma of having “basics” in their closet to grow from that foundation. However, their foundation for finding their unique style is already broken. You cannot expect to find your style by going off what other people deem as staples in your wardrobe. Only you can truly pick and choose what works for you and what makes you feel good. It takes time to be comfortable in your clothes and try not to be influenced by someone you admire online.
It’s hard, but the fight to overcome the looming shadow of the basics is necessary to grow into oneself. This coming fall and winter season, I encourage you to try different styles. Look at the textures of sweaters, the shape of tops, and the durability of jackets. Look at different jewelry and experiment with what you like (gold and silver are not the only options!).
While fashion content creators are nice to look at for inspiration, you are not them. People on the internet will always find something to complain about. The long denim skirt, platforms, loafers, low-rise jeans, high-rise jeans. All of these things are amazing pieces that can be styled in numerous ways and different styles! Some influencers have said that they are basics for everyone’s closet which, we know by now is not true. While others have had rather negative comments on each of the items listed. The issue is that people with too much power on their platforms influence others into thinking that they don’t look good they’re impossible to style or they’re not practical.
Fashion and your journey with style don’t have to be rigid. You’re allowed to have fun and try new things without having to worry about having the “right” things for your closet. With time, you’ll discover what your unique style is and what pieces work best for you.
