Fall Trends Inspired by New York Fashion Week and Beyond
New York Fashion Week took place from September 7 through September 13 and was full of gorgeous looks that have fashion lovers obsessed. Renowned fashion designers from around the world showcased their latest collections, and with the fall season in full swing, several exciting trends have emerged.
On September 8, Christian Siriano debuted a collection composed of ballet pinks, bows, ruffles, and tulle, capturing the essence of a dark, romantic woman. Gen Z has been mesmerized by the “soft girl” aesthetic for years, but this style has now evolved into “soft coquette”—a style that embraces a playful, feminine look originating from vintage-inspired fashion. Celebrities like Sydney Sweeney, Lana Del Rey, and Billie Eilish have also incorporated this style into their clothing and their fans often follow suit. This aesthetic calls for ribbons everywhere, and the beauty of this trend is ribbons don’t have to be limited to a hair accessory. Ribbons are extremely versatile and can create the perfect addition to any outfit.
There is no denying that Y2K has also made its way back into the fashion scene in the past couple of years. A Y2K-inspired trend that currently has female celebrities like Bella Hadid and Shay Mitchell in a chokehold is the thick black headband. Surprisingly chic and minimalistic, this headband pairs wonderfully with the coquette soft girl trend and serves as a nostalgic nod to the 2000s. It’s a staple for girls who need to keep their hair in place, which can be especially useful in various settings whether on a windy day during the fall season or during physical activity. Furthermore, a black headband can be worn casually with athleisure or dressed up with a formal outfit, adding elegance to any look. Not to mention, black is a classic and timeless color that never goes out of style.
Fall fashion wouldn't be complete without shoes, and from the looks of it, this year’s shoe trends are promising. It is time to say goodbye to uncomfortable heeled pumps and ankle boots, as ballet flats are making a triumphant return. These beloved shoes from the early 2010s—once the go-to for middle school dances—are back. Whether they have a rounded or squared toe or are made from satin, resembling authentic ballet flats, these shoes are the epitome of comfort. They perfectly complement the coquette aesthetic, allowing the wearer to dance through life with grace and ease. Another shoe that is trending this fall is the clog. Last fall, 70s-inspired pieces were popular, and now they’re back (with spice). Instead of the typical clog that has been seen time and time again, clog boots have been introduced, and this could be a game changer. They can be styled in various ways, whether that be with a t-shirt and jeans or with a cozy knit dress.
Fashion trends have a way of coming full circle, revisiting the past while adding a modern twist. As fall 2023 continues, it's clear the fashion world is appreciating nostalgia, romance, and versatility this year.
