The Return of Jennifer’s Body
The cult classic Jennifer’s Body is making a return on social media. This movie is praised for its dark humor and underlying message of assault and a woman’s revenge that ensues against all males.
If you haven’t seen the movie, to sum it up for you, it follows Anita a.k.a. “Needy,” and her best friend Jennifer living in a small town. The two go to a local bar’s big event for an out-of-town growing band- when a fire breaks out, killing those trapped in the fire. The band, Jennifer, and Needy make it out of the bar, with Jennifer in shock and silent. Jennifer goes with the band in their van, separating her from Needy. The band sacrifices Jennifer- against her will- in a ritual to gain fame, believing she’s a virgin. She is not, in fact, a virgin, resulting in the ritual going wrong and her becoming a succubus. Needy notices a change in Jennifer as she one by one consumes the boys of her town/school who are only attracted to her for her body. After Needy finds out what Jennifer is, she hunts her down. Jennifer eats/kills Needy’s boyfriend, then bites Needy. Needy successfully kills Jennifer but now is also part supernatural. She breaks out of the asylum she was put in for the murder of Jennifer, and hunts down the band that sacrificed Jennifer for her friend’s revenge.
As you can see, this is a unique story that finds a way to send the message of the consequences of assault with a vengeful, badass, beautiful villain. This movie was one of few of its time to send this message in such a way, believed to inspire other movies of vengeful women reborn from assault, like the movie Promising Young Woman.
Because of its originality and artistic meaning, the hype around this movie has never seemed to die down among fans, old and new. This movie has recently spread on social media, more specifically TikTok, to fans taking to their own interpretation and style inspired by Jennifer’s Body.
