Do We Really Need Designer Tech?

Tech has become one of the most desirable accessories in fashion. Wearable technology is seen everywhere, from Apple headphones to fitness watches, existing as a reminder of the ever-evolving need for the latest and the greatest devices. But while the big names in tech like Apple and Google have established dominance in the industry, major fashion houses are now invading the scene by creating tech products with a designer look, but who’s buying these products?

One of the fashion houses that has broken into the tech world is Louis Vuitton, whose twist on earbuds called “Horizon earphones,” released in 2019. Since then, they have upgraded and marketed varied styles to both music and fashion lovers alike. The $1,660 Bluetooth earbuds have styles designed by Virgil Abloh as well as vibrant colorways and personalization options.

The Horizon earbud experience emphasizes listening in style, but is the high price tag worth it? When you buy designer goods, you’re buying a label that represents luxury as you would with any other accessory like a handbag or sunglasses. Yet, tech like the Louis Vuitton earbuds are relatively new and elicit contrasting consumer reactions. The consensus from critics notes that the earbuds look cheap. However, they are designed with high-end style in mind and have underwhelming sound quality. The advertisement for the buds plays off of the ecstasy of music, taking a more artful approach to the usual tech ads from popular brands.

The real question when it comes to designer brands breaking into the tech world is how they can keep up when brands like Apple and Samsung have dominated the market for so long. The top companies have undisputed power through branding and popularity among devoted fanbases. Despite the apparent competition, all tech producers rely on the fact that so many people enjoy music and wearable technology that allows users to have a soundtrack for their daily life.

The tech industry is constantly changing and always evolving to fit the needs of the people who feed into the latest trends. Technology has come a long way, from dial-up internet to the progression of augmented reality and other digital spheres. Even Adidas, as a major apparel company, has eased its way into tech through participation in the metaverse.

It will be interesting to see how luxury brands plan to compete with products like the Apple AirPod Max, which has become a fashion staple in the last year, or even the Sony headphones consistently worn by actress Jenna Ortega. Whether you participate in the wearable tech movement for popular aesthetics or convenience and functionality, the billion-dollar industry prevails.
