Defeat

STRIKE MAGAZINE UF ISSUE 06, DESTINATION 3

In striving for perfection, we confront defeat. While on our journey to this drained destination, we are accompanied by inner demons and embody an artificial state of being that rages in isolation. Feelings of frustration, anxiety and animosity drown our creative wonders, and often cause us to wonder why we yearned to create in the first place. Shoot three is a representation of this dirty degradation, and of the necessity of facing failure before finding tranquility in it as a collective experience.

“I had a blast creating shoot three. Nikolai, the model, is such a talented actor and working with him was so much fun. He did an amazing job capturing the unfiltered emotion that the video encapsulates; it’s such a raw and visceral experience.”

— SAM ASFOOR, FILM ASSISTANT

BEHIND-THE-SCENES

“For shoot three, the Editorial Team sought to convey the hurt of being chewed up and spit out, and the exhaustion of the expectation to carry on after that. We drew inspiration from writers, like Sylvia Path and Edgar Allen Poe, but recognized how this draining defeat isn’t unique to just the prestigious or the poets. Regardless of its weight or our reaction, everyone faces personal and universal defeats. Our articles talk about how our society collectively endures – and contributes – to this dangerous, yet seemingly unavoidable, feeling.”

— HANNAH SHELTON, ASSISTANT EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

“I can say with confidence we have all tread through lamentable outcomes [in the curation of art]. To be most blunt, it sucks. I believe shoot three dismisses the allure of nonchalance in curation.”

— TANNER CREWS, CONTENT TEAM BLUE DIRECTOR

“Getting madness from the arts is like a high. When you’re writing, painting or making music, you’re ecstatic about it. When it comes to writer’s block, you can’t get that feeling anymore; you go crazy because your body is craving creativity, and it’s not happening. It’s like a withdrawal.”

— GABRIELA DONATI, CONTENT TEAM ORANGE ASSISTANT

“Our approach in Issue 06 was different because of our focus on the destination, including the journey that it takes to get to that point. For us, this meant multiple looks over one shoot – a look that ‘transformed’ as the shoot went on. In some cases, it was adding more makeup at the shoot location, such as right on the lake during shoot one, or taking some away, like the fade to a lifeless model in shoot three, to symbolize the depletion aspect of that shoot.”

— EMMA HESSE, BEAUTY DIRECTOR
