Creative Halloween Costume Ideas That We Need to See This Year
It's that time of year again. Halloween is coming and if you’re still not sure what to wear, don’t worry, I’ve laid out some costume ideas. These ideas range from basic to complex and from conceptual to straightforward. They’re all up for interpretation and can be changed to match your personal style and budget!
Creative costume ideas:
Sonny Angel: A fun hat that shows the kind of Sonny Angel you are and a nude bodysuit with angel wings. Don’t be a basic angel, be a Sonny Angel. You’re sure to be the cutest at any party. Maybe even do a makeup look to make your eyes look bigger!
Garden gnome: Pair a vest with some bloomers and pointy hats! You can even hold a watering can or a flower.
Jester: Wear an argyle pattern with a jester hat. You can make this super fun and campy. You can definitely DIY it or find a cute outfit from a store.
Little bo peep: All you need is to pair some gingham and lace with a bonnet and a cane! Bonus if you dress your pet like a sheep.
Masquerade: Find a mask that encompasses your personality or the look you want to go for and match an outfit to it. This can be a mysterious way to stand out and be unique! You can also recycle your own prom dress.. just a thought.
Siren: More enticing and sensual and spookier than your average mermaid. Slick back your hair, put in some colored contacts and wear something shimmery and long.
Conceptual ideas: A trend I expect to see a lot this Halloween is doing a “conceptual” costume. A conceptual costume is basically building a costume off of an idea rather than a character or something straightforward. This type of costume is perfect for someone who wants to steep away from anything basic! Below, I’ve listed some conceptual ideas that you could pull off on your own or in a group.
Drink Girls: (Espresso martini, Aperol Spritz, dirty martini, Shirley Temple, champagne, piña colada.) Get creative with it. This is a great idea for a group costume or on your own.
Kiss: (French kiss: beret and kiss prints on your cheeks. Butterfly kiss: wearing butterfly wings and kiss prints.)
Bad News: Wearing newspaper as a dress or top styled with leather and cool glasses.
Duos or couples ideas
Bert and Ernie: One needs a vertical striped sweater and the other needs a horizontal striped sweater. Pair them with some jeans and Converse.
Karen and Plankton: For Karen, break out your silver clothes and get crafty with a makeshift computer screen around your head. Plankton could wear a green shirt and bottoms or even a green bodysuit with antennas.
Maleficent and Diaval: Perfect for a couple who loves to be dark and extra. For Maleficent, you need to pull off her iconic headpiece and for Diaval style anything with dark feathers. You can be as big and extravagant as you want with this!
Priscilla and Elvis: Break out your inner 60s and 70s fashion. There are so many awesome outfits of theirs to recreate and you can go as simple or extravagant as you want with it!
A magician and their rabbit: This can be taken in a funny direction or a sexy one depending on your personal preference. The magician could wear a top hat and a suit and bowtie, and the rabbit could wear white with bunny ears and a tail!
Group ideas
A24 characters… imagine if Pearl, Maxine, Jobu Tapaki, and Marcel the Shell were in the same room.
The Sanderson sisters: Corsets, fish nets, skirts and boots are all you need to bring this outfit to life. Add some wigs, makeup and maybe a vacuum, mop and broom to make it really special.
Pretty Little Liars: There are so many outfits and fun moments to recreate from this iconic show! You could even wear the liar’s Halloween costumes.
Strawberry Shortcake and friends: Tap into your inner nostalgia and dress as Strawberry Shortcake and her friends. Striped tights and cute hats are a must.
Santa Claus (or Jack Frost), the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny: This is such a creative costume that you could do in a very simple or extravagant way. It is sure to be memorable!
