Bringing Groovy Back: The Reemergence of Psychedelic Prints
With a new age of rebellion and many social changes arising in the past decade, it’s hard to believe we are not back in the 60s. Even the current fashion trends have been taking a nod back to the flower power decade, incorporating small nods to a now vintage style. It’s no surprise that millennials and Gen Z’s are taking a stab at the colorful looks, and even many large fashion brands are pulling together for a new spin on hippie-chic, but it is important to remember where it all started.
According to The Headspace, “Psychedelic Fashion turned into a route for external reality transformed by the dreams projected by the internal screen of the mind.” In other words, in an era of the exploration of the mind, designers and fashion lines seized an opportunity to not only allow their consumers to expand their mind, but also expand their style.
The idea of “phantasmagoria” or a dream-like reality, brought forth a new world for people, especially in a time of uncertainty, war, and violence. It also highlighted the styles and textures of other cultures, drawing a lot of inspiration from Africa and Asia.
With all the chaos in our own world today, bring some “phantasmagoria” into your life with these colorful pieces.
DRESS IT UP
Although your new job interview may be on zoom, you can still spice up your outfit with this houndstooth blouse straight from the 60s. I’ll be the first to say that I will always opt for black and white when it comes to fashion. If you’re like me, you can still pay a monochromatic homage to this wild era. The puffy sleeves may offer a nod to the decades ago, but the houndstooth takes it back to the 60’s mod era. For a classic look with a modern spin, add the leather pants!
AT THE BEACH
With swim season upon us, new lines have begun to roll out just in time for spring. Many of them have opted for subtle nods to the age of Aquarius, including Frankie’s Bikinis, with fun prints such as the groovy one above. You can see the colorful vibrance, honoring the chaotic 60’s print on the right. Take this on your next beach trip and try adding a bucket hat!
ESSENTIAL
An accessory not familiar to the 60s, yet an essential item for today, the mask, has been taken over by the color invasion. Add a little ‘fab’ to your outfit with a groovy print on your face mask like the one above from Urban Outfitters. After all, what gives more peace and love than masking up and protecting others!
Even with all the new concepts and exciting experiments that spill from the fashion industry, it’s comforting to see that old habits die hard, and psychedelic fashion has been revived for the next generation of youth to enjoy. In a world that can sometimes feel gray, it’s always nice to add a little bit of color.
Strike Out,
