Beauty Products Designed to Destress

No matter how hectic our schedules can get, it’s crucial that we take time for ourselves. There are a variety of ways people recenter their minds and distress: get outside and enjoy some much-needed fresh air, sweat a bit with a great workout, or wind down with a fan-favorite book or television show. Another common way to destress is through a little self-pampering.

The first step is to focus on what the body physically needs. Try to give attention to all of your senses and take a few moments to reflect on these questions: Is your skin and hair getting the nourishment they need? Is your environment soothing and pleasing to the eyes and ears? What self-care practices give you the most joy? These questions will heighten your awareness of what is distracting you within your space and will help you notice which areas of your body need extra love.

The types of products we use on our bodies also influence our energy, positivity, and alertness. Some beauty products are better at destressing than others because they are designed with that goal in mind. Here are a few of the best beauty products to use during your next pampering session.

Aromatherapy Soaps

Scents such as lavender, peppermint, and lemon all have calming and relaxing effects. Finding body soap with these scents — or ones specifically labeled as aromatherapy — help clear the mind of any stressors while also nourish the skin. Extreme fragrances can be irritating for individuals with sensitive skin, so aromatherapy products with natural scents are likely to use more natural ingredients. Based on the scent, aromatherapy soaps can help you feel more energized, calm, or sleepy.

Face Masks

Because the skin on your face is structured in ways unlike the skin on your body, it must be treated differently. Those two-dollar face masks are not benefiting your face — no matter what the label says. Invest in a higher quality face mask that focuses on hydration, texture control, and clarification. If you have variant skin, having a variety set like this one from Origins is great to have on hand so you can address a wider range of skin issues.

Serums and Body Oils

I used to think that serums were only going to make my skin oilier and acne-ridden, but this is so untrue! Oily skin is actually your body’s way of overcompensating for dry skin, so giving your skin an extra boost is always welcomed. The Ordinary has an affordable line of face serums that give you the ingredients you need, while also leaving out all of the harsh, cheap chemicals and fragrances. Some of their best serums include the Peeling Solution, Hyaluronic Acid, and Niacinamide.

Nail Polish

One of my favorite self-care practices is painting my nails. A lot of women go and get their nails professionally done, and this is just as valuable. Doing it myself allows me to put in a little work to show my body care and focus on the task at hand. My favorite polishes come from OPI, and their Infinite Shine Collection is as close to salon-quality as you can get without actually going. It’s also worth noting that you can substitute painting your nails for other things you enjoy: a 10-minute yoga session, a quick massage, a warm bubble bath — you get the idea.

Hydrating Hair Masks

Between a plethora of products and heat-based styling tools, our hair goes through a lot. Putting in a refreshing mask (like this one by Eva NYC!) loaded with argan oil and plant protein gives your hair the rejuvenation it needs while also providing essential antioxidants and vitamins. Using hair masks regularly prevents breakage and discoloration, and you’ll never see another bad hair day ever again.

Having a few of these items on hand whenever you start feeling overwhelmed or stressed can make the world of a difference. Your mental health and personal wellness should be your first priority, so pay close attention to what your body needs.
