A Fashion Major’s Top 5 Shows from NYFW23

Ladies and Gentlemen, the fashion Superbowl is upon us: New York Fashion Week. If you are a clothing lover, like myself, you will know that this past week has been filled with shows that have demonstrated impeccable taste, lasting trends and all the glitz. After the close inspection of dozens upon dozens of shows, here’s the breakdown of my top 5 favorite shows from NYFW23—with the best for last, of course.

Number 5: Bach Mai

Bach Mai is a graduate of Parsons who began his work as an assistant to John Galliano. He now owns and operates his own brand in New York City, where he created high-end pieces that spark feelings of dynamic glamour. His show made sure to bring all the drama with a collection of exclusively floor-length gowns. His use of a distinct color palette created a cohesive visual experience. When watching his show, I found myself particularly drawn to the textures and diverse structures of his fabrics. He is definitely someone to watch in the coming seasons.

Number 4: LoveShackFancy

While I don’t personally own any pieces from this brand, I find myself forced to admit that LoveShackFancy put on quite the show for Fashion Week. By sticking to their classic colors and themes, they were further able to curate a strong brand image at their show. The show was filled with florals, lace, pinks and whites, resulting in an over-curated feeling of fierce femininity. While not all the pieces may not be the most practical, they stun and bring an exciting visual factor.

Number 3: Veronica Beard

I absolutely adored Veronica Beard’s collection and show! I found this show to be simply functional and relatable in a way that no other show was able to quite replicate. While there is such beauty in the creativity of Fashion Week, sometimes there are looks that are so over-the-top and extravagant that they end up missing the mark for their viewers. However, these looks were the very opposite. I could visualize myself donning each and every one of these looks. They were effortless, chic and wearable.

Number 2: TIBI

TIBI’s off-site warehouse runway show demonstrated an excellent understanding of clean lines and versatile pieces. They stuck to their staple neutrals full of grays, navies, blacks and whites, while also integrating the occasional pops of color with red and green. They showcased structured suit sets, garments of varying lengths and overall pragmatic looks. Additionally, I was impressed by the diversity in their models’ races, sexes and ages.

Number 1: Carolina Herrera

Last but not least, the Carolina Herrera show was full of pieces that I want to add to my closet. I loved watching their show, as this was a brand I had never heard of or explored before. Their show consisted of a wide variety of styles, colors, textures and prints. From large ball gowns to simple skirts to suit sets, every piece was absolutely breathtaking. I also loved how their runway went from inside the building, down the sidewalk outside and then back indoors. I always love it when I get to learn about a new brand through Fashion Week!

Needless to say, this year was a huge success for many brands that presented their pieces. The world of runway and ready-to-wear fashion is always changing and evolving, thus it is always a special experience to witness creativity arising. Now onto Milan!

Strike Out,
