A 21st Century Twist on Bridgerton’s 19th Century Fashion
Now that the Duke of Hastings and Daphne Bridgerton have completely stolen our hearts in the new Netflix series “Bridgerton,” we all want to look just like them. We’re not talking about the blush-worthy romance, but the high-society fashion of the Regency era. The 19th century costuming is far from similar to our modern day fashion, but that doesn’t mean we can’t live out our Bridgerton-inspired dreams.
The Fringe
Daphne Bridgerton’s short cut fringe is iconic but undeniably outdated in our contemporary world of streetwear and edge. Trade the elegantly parted bangs for a wispy and messy fringe. Whether you add dimension with curtain bangs, a French fringe or Bardot bangs, 2021 is welcoming these hairstyles with open arms.
The Corset
Bridgerton officially connected regal fashion with urban fashion. We have always seen corsets in couture, but the series renewed outfit inspiration for this multifaceted clothing article. What was once hidden under gowns, acting as a waist slimmer and bust push-up —a possible metaphor for patriarchal influence— has been transformed into an item for powerful women. The corsets we know and adore are worn alone or cinched over a loose button up or tee to show confidence in your figure.
The Colors
While the Featherington’s are notorious for their bright and unusually paired colors — sunset yellows, oranges, and pinks — the Bridgerton’s powdery pastels are the muted pop of color you want in your everyday outfits. The pale blues and greens represented the family’s prominence during the social season of courting. This color scheme has been seen throughout modern high fashion, loungewear and everywhere in between.
The Gloves
The ladies of Bridgerton typically sport long silk gloves. We could never forget the Duke removing Daphne’s glove to expose her bare hand, now could we? A small lace glove is sure to make you feel as regal as it is seductive. Adding chunky rings and a chain bracelet over the accessory will draw extra attention to the thin layer of lace covering your hand.
The Empire Waist
Square neckline and puff sleeves. The Empire silhouette gown of the Regency era translates into the 21st Century babydoll dress. Girly? Yes. Versatile? Absolutely! Add some grunge into the mix with a pair of Doc Martens to tone down the chic regality of it all. If you’re looking to feel like Daphne Bridgerton, add an embellished barrette in place of the crown or some kitten heels and a chunky necklace.
