The Devil Works Hard but Lorenzo Posocco Works Harder
Everyone say, “Thank you, Dua Lipa’s stylist!”
The 2021 Grammy Awards sparked a lot of conversation, but no one was getting more attention than Dua Lipa and her various Versace outfits. Dua, who has previously been the butt of the ‘go girl, give us nothing’ joke, has found herself on the receiving end of much praise. A sense of style and a good stylist can affect both someone’s public and self perception. Let’s dive into her style evolution.
Good styling is one of the most common reasons as to why people take notice of celebrities and public figures, making or breaking a celebrity’s public image. For example, a bad outfit lands you on the worst dressed list to be made fun of and mocked, but being on the best dressed list is rewarded with praise and shares on Instagram stories. As they say, any publicity is good publicity, and being a celebrity, as well as a sought after fashion icon, adds to the amount of anxious eyes ready to repost red carpet looks.
What we wear is a reflection of who we are; what celebrities wear is a reflection of who and what they choose to represent. Designer house’s best publicity comes from celebrities wearing their designs to events. Donatella Versace did not dress Dua in four Versace outfits to NOT post her on her own Instagram. A good stylist creates the relationships essential to celebrities scoring these avant-garde ensembles. (Recently, taking it a step further and having these celebrities be the face of their brands.) Donatella wants us to think of Dua and Versace in the same line of thought.
Dua’s stylist is Lorenzo Posocco. Posocco’s connections are part of what makes him an extraordinary stylist. The success of his long-term career helped land Dua as the first celebrity to be seen in Raf Simons’ first womenswear collection. Posocco notably states that he gets inspiration from anywhere, such as stories, and brings these ideas into a look.
Dua is a prime, but not the only, example of how a great stylist can bring a career to the next level. Another great in the styling world is Law Roach, who can be credited with elevating the Instagrams of widely known celebrities (Celine Dion, nbd). He is known for curating looks that deliver internet fame. One of his closest connections is to the universally accepted, fashion world darling, Zendaya. Roach began styling Zendaya as a teen, and transformed her from a Disney girl to a fashion icon. Never forget Zendaya’s Joan of Arc look, in Law Roach we trust. His genius picks can be attributed to how he thinks of his stylings, similar to Posocco, as being a story or character. “He creates an image; he creates a character for that celebrity. If you look at Zendaya, she’s always playing a different character on the red carpet” (Lorenzo Marquez). Anne Hathaway is also on his roster, as one who has enjoyed an elevation in online clout as a result of his influence.
We can see the impact a successful stylist has, as the hype of Dua Lipa has not died down in the weeks since the Grammy Awards. A stylist is able to take a celebrity that is merely recognizable to a fashion star; stylists are the key to being on the right side of the Hollywood conversation. A good stylist should never be underestimated or left in the shadows, they can be the difference between being a Twitter joke and everyone’s Pinterest boards.
