Your Perfect Rom-Com Girl Fall Playlist
November may be in full swing, but we’re still holding on to the remnants of fall as we transition into the season of anxiously sitting in a freezing car, waiting for it to warm up while dazed by the twinkling lights outside your window.
Luckily for you, I’ve taken the challenge upon myself to kickstart the perfect fall and winter playlist inspired by none other than the queen of ‘90s rom-coms, Meg Ryan. The following ten tracks are the perfect start to building your transitional playlist. These songs feel like watching You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, and Sleepless in Seattle. Happy yearning and pining!
Do I even need to tell you what the first track is? Of course, we’re opening with the song “Nothing New” by Taylor Swift featuring Phoebe Bridgers. To ensure the energy doesn’t fall too low, we’ll follow up with “Bags” by Clairo, but it must be the version recorded at Electric Lady Studios—no exceptions. It’s the perfect blend of sad lyrics with upbeat production.
Bon Iver’s “For Emma” is our third track; despite the song's growing popularity on TikTok, many of its long-time listeners may resent its emergence into the mainstream. Fortunately for us, their failed gatekeeping attempts mean that we have been exposed to the rhapsodic, soothing allure of Bon Iver. The song’s three and a half minutes make you feel like you’re pining after your lost lover in a Nora Ephron film. Don’t fight it; click “add to playlist.”
What would a fall playlist be without Taylor Swift’s “‘tis the damn season”? Truthfully, you could put the entirety of folklore or evermore on this playlist and call it a day, but that’s the easy way out. The same goes for Harry Styles’ debut solo album, but more specifically, we’ll narrow it down to the tenth track of the record, “From the Dining Table.”
Noah Kahan fans, I hope you’re still here — let’s go ahead and add “Northern Attitude” as our sixth song on this playlist. Kahan’s gut-wrenching lyrics have the potential to be eclipsed by his strong guitar notes and powerful voice.
Returning to the more indie side of the playlist, track seven of this playlist is “Revolution 0” from the debut boygenius album, the record. “Revolution 0” primarily showcases Phoebe Bridgers’ vocals. Keeping with the theme of Phoebe on this playlist, we’ll add “Savior Complex” from her sophomore album Punisher to the mix.
Channeling the rock undertones of this playlist, the ninth track is “Dreams” by The Cranberries. This song feels like lighting a woodsy-scented candle while watching Gilmore Girls.
The final track of this playlist is “How to disappear” by Lana Del Rey. From her most well-received album, Norman F*****g Rockwell!, this song is the perfect way to close your rom-com girl collection.
Though merely ten suggestions, these songs represent a seamless transition from fall to winter as you channel your inner Meg Ryan this holiday season.
Strike Out,
