Your Guide to 2021’s Music Festival Fashion

After almost two years of struggling to fight Covid-19, vaccines and a lowered number of cases have made it possible for the return of live music. Many artists are finally able to perform again for the first time at music festivals across the country since Covid. Music festivals are a creative and entertaining way to celebrate music, as well as an opportunity for individuals to express themselves through fashion and beauty. Music festival fashion is typically more similar to costumes than something you would wear on a daily basis. Part of the fun of music festivals is the ability to create a unique look that is fun, flashy, and stands out from the crowd. Many people planning to attend festivals will spend weeks or even months planning out their perfect festival outfit. Here are some of the biggest music festival fashion trends for the year of 2021 as live music and music festivals have finally returned nationwide.

Sequined skirts - Sequined skirts are very common at music festivals, and can be found in an array of colors and patterns. These skirts are typically wrapped around the waist, tied at the back and worn over shorts. The tassels make for a fun, swingy piece that moves with you as you jump and dance to the music. They are typically sported in a solid color, such as silver or pink, and can be matched with a fun top. Sequined bralette tops or solid color bandeaus or tank tops usually make for a fun matching set that is sure to sparkle at any music festival.

Fanny packs - Fanny packs are a cute and convenient way to carry any personal belongings with style! They can be found in just about any color to match any outfit, and are very popular in neon and chrome. They are extremely functional and a great alternative to dragging a bag around with you all day. Their simplicity and versatility make them easy to incorporate into any outfit.

Mesh maxi skirts - Mesh maxi skirts, typically coming in black, white, or silver and patterned with stars or sparkles, are another trendy piece often seen at festivals. They are often worn over shorts or cheeky bottoms. They are super lightweight as they are see-through, helping you to stay cool in hot temperatures that usually come with music festivals. Many festival-goers will often pair these skirts with large statement-piece belts, fanny packs or funky boots.

Butterfly tops - Butterfly tops are bright, sequined tops in the shape of a butterfly, with one wing stretching over each side of the body and leaving an open back. They have grown in popularity after being worn by celebrities such as Saweetie and Mariah Carey. They are extremely unique statement pieces that come in a variety of patterns, colors, styles and sparkles — you’ll rarely see the same one twice.

Shaped Sunglasses - Large shaped sunglasses are a great accessory to add to any music festival look. Glasses shaped like hearts, clouds, stars, or even large square or circular glasses are commonly worn at music festivals. Not only are they super functional for those bright, hot music festival days, but they’re super trendy and can add a bit of extra fun to any outfit!

Fishnets - Fishnets are an extremely popular piece used to accessorize underpants, or can be worn as pants themselves with shorts or cheeky bottoms. They are most common in black, but can be found in neon green or pink as well. Fishnet or mesh shirts are also popular, allowing for layering as well as showing off some skin.

Face jewels - Face jewels are a great way to add even more sparkle and shine to your look! They are a great way to tie an outfit together and add an extra “pop.” Most sets of face jewels come in one simple sheet that can be applied directly to your face — you won’t have to apply the jewels one by one! They also come in a variety of colors and sizes, making them easy to match with any outfit for an extra touch of shimmer.

Bralettes - For a more simple and comfortable look, bralettes are a popular choice at music festivals. They are super light and a great choice for people who are comfortable with showing off a bit more skin. Bralettes can be worn as tops or under other pieces to accessorize and add in another pop of color or pattern.

Neon/ Chrome - Much of the clothing worn at music festivals comes in neon — especially yellow, green, blue and pink. Chrome is also extremely popular, and can be found in anything from pants, tops, shoes and fanny packs. When deciding on an outfit for a music festival, anything chrome or neon is usually a safe bet.
