Where to Shop This Black History Month…and Forever

February means Aquarius season, barely surviving the bitter cold walks to classes and, most importantly, Black History Month. Now, more than ever, we are reminded of our duties as advocates of the Black community. One critical way that you can demonstrate your support is by aiding in the survival of disproportionately affected Black-owned businesses. While you’re amping up your winter wardrobe and begin planning for spring, keep these Black-owned companies on your radar for pieces you’ll love.

One DNA

One DNA is a Black and queer-owned business that boasts an impressive collection of gender neutral clothes. All of their pieces make a statement—both literally and figuratively. A number of their solid-colored sweats, tees and hats are adorned with phrases such as “Women Are Powerful” and “BLM.” The company offers bottoms, tops, dresses and accessories for both our neutrals lovers and those who like to experiment with color. You’d think it couldn’t get better...but it does! One DNA’s products are made from organic and recycled fabrics. Make your way onto One DNA’s site for your next sweatsuit or vibrant cable-knit sweater.

Kiki The Brand

Kiki The Brand was brought to life in the summer of 2017 in South Florida, originating as a bikini company. Since then, the business has expanded to feature flattering dresses, matching sets and lingerie made of fun prints and colors. Whether you’re looking for a dress for your next formal or getting ahead on your bikini hunt for spring break, this shop is a must.

Brownstone

Brownstone hosts a collection of clothes that is completely unique and current. Fresh graphics, neat patchwork, a variety of textiles—it’s all there. Highlights of their brand include their crewnecks and hoodies, which are (luckily) on the cheaper end of their garments. Additionally, Brownstone has plenty of bold colors and patterns for those seeking to spice up their wardrobe. You are sure to stand out in any one of their pieces.

Re Ona

Now, on to my personal favorite: Re Ona. This Black-owned fashion company has everything you need to establish a collection of basics and begin layering. Most of their pieces are shades of black, white, gray and brown, and they range from formal dresses to biker shorts.  I am a huge fan of their selection of oversized blazers, which could be paired perfectly with any one of their trousers, skirts, bralettes or dresses. For those wanting to build or maintain a simple, sophisticated and trendy closet, you need to check out Re Ona.

Bricks & Wood

Finishing out our list is Bricks & Wood. This brand offers an assortment of contemporary streetwear that is inspired by life in its place of origin: South Central LA. While it appears that most items are designed for men, their graphic tees and sweat sets could easily be styled for anyone. Their garments are designed with captivating patterns and phrases, and they have an impressive selection of headwear. Their heavy knit beanies are both stylish and perfect for the Midwest cold, and their bucket hats are sure to be a staple as we transition into spring.

As we remember and reflect throughout Black History Month, let us also take action. We all shop, so why not allow the intersection of ourselves as consumers and advocates?
