Wear Innerwear Everywhere?

Seeing someone’s undergarments was once risqué, but after this year’s New York Fashion Week, that stereotype is quickly transforming. Recently, lingerie has been worn as the statement piece in an outfit, giving ladies a boost of confidence when styling themselves for the day. Times are changing as lingerie stands to exude bold attitude and empowerment. Such trends include styled bodysuits, bras, thongs, and corsets adding feminine details to any look to create a high-fashion appeal. This trend was started by Madonna during the ‘80s, but even more recently, Rihanna has been admired for her creation of the Savage x Fenty Lingerie line.

As of recent, Rihanna embodies a musician turned entrepreneur. She graced New York Fashion Week by designing a show that not only exhibited diversity, but her beautifully sexy lingerie line. Held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Bad Gal RiRi triumphantly de-crowned the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The artist created her own “fantasy” aside from Victoria’s Secret’s, who stated they would not allow the participation of transgender or plus-size models. With a strict policy of no-phones, top models such as Gigi and Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne, and Slick Woods danced down the runway in their Savage X designs before the audience including celebrities Halsey, Ashley Graham, and Kehlani. These celebrities celebrated body inclusivity by wearing their favorite pieces from the Savage x Fenty line down the red carpet before the event. The runway showcased women of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities presenting a celebration of racial diversity.

Throughout the creation of the Savage x Fenty Lingerie line, Rihanna explains “my vision for Savage X has always been inclusivity, has always been having women feel confident and expressing themselves through a little lace, a little corsetry, a little T-Shirt bra.” She kept those aspects in mind when designing the latest line and believes there are no rules when creating lingerie. Truly, this is revealed through the models on the runway, avoiding the typical catwalk strut and opting for more body movement in a natural sense. This is how Rihanna wants women to feel when wearing her pieces adding, “you can go as comfortable as you want, you can go as sexy as you want.” The message behind Savage X goes along with Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line, which displays a wide shade range prioritizing inclusivity and encouraging diversity.

Rihanna is the ultimate boss as she continues to benefit women and help them find their confidence through clothing and her music. Rihanna also made history when she launched Fenty, becoming the first black woman to head an LVMH brand. With her portfolio broadening, Rihanna stands to make the statement “diversity is not a trend.” The show created an ideal for women to not only look in their closets for styling inspiration but their intimate drawer as well. Whether strutting a lacey slip dress with a silk duster for a boudoir vibe or wearing a strappy bralette topped with a longline blazer, every lady can transform her innerwear into outerwear.
