#UNLITTER Your Life

“#UNLITTER is a contagious positivity. I haven’t seen anything catch on like this since snapchat came out.” - Sabina Osman

Last week I caught up with Sabina Osman from the #UNLITTER Movement, which has gained a huge amount of momentum in the last couple of years and made an immense impact on people’s attitudes regarding the environment. Their massive following has tripled in size in the past years, with some traveling statewide to spread the message. Ranging from beach clean-ups in Miami to FutureForFriday rallies in Mexico, followers have sparked a passionate fire for change that doesn’t result in our Earth burning to pieces. The #UNLITTER evolution was founded to “inspire and empower people to make the world a better place.” Here is a summary of my ongoing conversation with Osman. I am attempting to learn the pieces to the puzzle that have formed the #UNLITTER movement and caused a critical shift in communities nationwide. UNLITTER has not only magnified the perspectives of so many individuals in varying communities but has also embedded itself into the daily routine of many followers, myself included. Join now and watch your work change lives.

Strike Magazine (SM): What got you started with #UNLITTER? –more specifics, how/who people can reach out to (mention me or you if that is okay)// why did you decide to create/spread this movement?

Sabrina Osman (SO): The movement speaks for itself, the word is catchy, once I recognized the power in it, I wanted to spread it.

SM: What is the single most impactful change someone can make to #UNLITTER their lifestyle?

SO: Be a mindful consumer. Stop & think about what will end up in a landfill before every purchase. and make your choices to vote with your dollar and specifically support companies that you care about, and most important companies that align with the UNLITTER mission.

SM: What is one thing you always do when you need a break/time to #UNLITTER (bring peace to) your mind?

SO: This picture says enough.

Sabina often finds herself out in the water, destressing on her favorite toy, a longboard. The water tends to eliminate her worries which is why she is defending her oceans. Keeping our oceans clean is a vital component for surfers, which is why many choose to follow the #UNLITTER movement.

SM: What has been the most influential experience you’ve had with #UNLITTER?

SO: Traveling around the world and spreading the movement has been an extremely powerful experience and process. Watching the word “#unlitter” catch on and create change in communities across the globe has made a lasting impact on my psyche, and has motivated me to keep propelling this mission.

SM: What impact has #UNLITTER made on communities locally and globally?

SO: #UNLITTER has inspired countless businesses & events to reduce their environmental impact. It instills a sense of awareness in people that motivates them to act with environmental consciousness.

SM: How does #UNLITTER play into your everyday life? How can others join?

SO: #UNLITTER is not only my passion, but others can join the movement by spreading #unlitter in their towns. So far, The #UNLITTER Movement has reached countless cities around the planet. Others can join simply by looking at UNLITTER’s website and joining the cause.

SM: How can people at FSU become more involved in #UNLITTER?

SO: Others can join the movement by participating in their University’s #UNLITTER Campus Challenge. This is an opportunity for individuals to team up and showcase their love for the environment and their community by competing in simple tasks that leave a lasting impact.
