Trend Predictions for 2023

Every new year, we fashionmongers anticipate the latest and greatest trends. What comes to mind when you recall what we wore in 2005? This was the era of low-rise pants, micro mini skirts, vests, and kitten heels. What about 2012? Personally, I was thriving as an eleven-year-old in my Tumblr girl era, sporting galaxy leggings and neon hair bows. And does anyone even remember what was considered cool during the COVID-19 pandemic? We were all stuck at home, cutting our own curtain bangs (I was a victim) and chilling in sweats. This was how athleisure was born. Recently, the Y2K trends have been making a comeback, but not without room for new and unique styles. This spring, I’m interested in seeing what stays, what goes, and what changes.

My first prediction for this season is maxi skirts. More specifically, denim maxi skirts. They have been popping up everywhere, from runways to celebrity streetwear to chic thrifted outfits. Maison Margiela took a distressed approach to the denim skirt, seen in the photo below. This look is from their MM6 spring 2023 show, which showcased this skirt in black, too. The layering effect of the bodysuits helps to create a modern look. Its versatility and comfort make this piece a staple in your 2023 spring wardrobe.

My next prediction is sheer everything. Sheer garments are the perfect layerable addition to a night out, a dinner date, or just any moment when you know you’re going to be sweating but want to keep it stylish. “Naked dresses” have been a come-and-go trend, popularized by Kate Moss in the 90s and reborn into a truly iconic look at the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards when Rihanna left jaws on the floor of the red carpet.

While a naked dress might not be the look you’re aiming at for dinner, a mesh top paired with a bralette or a semi-sheer skirt will elevate any look while keeping you cool this spring and summer.

Last, my personal favorite: ballet core. Bows, body suits, ballet flats, and leg warmers galore. This ethereal, feminine style can be accomplished in a variety of ways. A pair of ballet flats worn with jeans and a white button-down is simple yet elegant. A more straightforward incorporation, like a corset bodysuit under a tulle skirt and dainty bows to accessorize, and you’re ready for your NYFW street-style photo op. I love this trend because, like athleisure, it combines coziness with a chic twist that can be worn virtually anywhere. This trend has been recently popularized by supermodels Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner and has made many appearances on the runway, most notably in Miu Miu’s fall/winter 2022 fashion show. Although this trend started last fall, I think it will survive until next winter. I believe this trend has yet to hit its peak.

No matter what trends come in or out this year, nothing will make heads turn more than finding your own personal style. Finding ways to elevate trends like these and making them your own vibe can enhance your fashion sense substantially. Whether it’s “in” or “out” of season, you look the best in what you’re comfortable and confident in.
